About the Role

We are seeking an inspiring and strategic Head of Engineering to lead our high-performing engineering teams at a leading e-commerce company. Reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer, this pivotal role will shape the technical direction of our organization, drive delivery excellence, and foster a collaborative, innovative culture. You will oversee the development of scalable web and mobile platforms in a fast-paced environment, ensuring alignment with business goals and enhancing our technical reputation and employer brand.

Key Responsibilities

• Leadership & Culture:
• Build and sustain a high-performing engineering culture that values creativity, collaboration, and delivery excellence.
• Foster an inclusive environment that promotes trust, transparency, and empathy, aligning with our company values.
• Lead recruitment, onboarding, retention, and development initiatives to attract and retain top talent.
• Technical Strategy:
• Contribute to strategic planning, budget setting, and long-term technical direction to drive business performance and customer experience.
• Oversee the delivery of scalable, robust technology solutions, navigating software development, infrastructure, UX, and operations.
• Provide input into release planning, effort estimation, and architectural decisions, jumping into code when needed.
• Team & Resource Management:
• Set goals and conduct performance reviews for direct reports, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
• Plan and manage resource needs, capability utilization, and engineering deliverables across teams.
• Maintain engineering artifacts, oversee cross-training, and ensure knowledge sharing to bridge gaps.
• Prepare engineering support rotas for seamless operational coverage.
• Stakeholder Engagement:
• Represent the technology pillar in cross-functional initiatives, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, from technical teams to board-level leaders.
• Drive adoption of best practices through communities of practice and cross-domain collaboration.
• Resolve conflicts related to people, processes, or technology in a constructive, forward-thinking manner.

What We’re Looking For

• Experience:
• Proven leadership of a major function, contributing to strategic planning, budget management, and business performance in a fast-paced environment.
• Comprehensive knowledge of cross-functional departments, systems, and industry trends, with a focus on e-commerce.
• Experience delivering innovative solutions that simplify complexity and enhance functional effectiveness.
• Strong track record of navigating software development, infrastructure, UX, and operations, balancing complex trade-offs under pressure.
• Technical Skills:
• Familiarity with modern e-commerce tech stacks, including AWS, GCP, PHP (Laravel, Symfony), NodeJS, React, TypeScript, Headless CMS, Algolia, CDP, Composable DXP, Adobe Commerce Cloud, and payment/fraud systems (e.g., Adyen, Forter).
• Ability to jump into code and architectural decisions to support teams and ensure robust solutions.
• Strong understanding of enterprise architecture and commercial priorities to align engineering with business goals.

Working Arrangements

• Hybrid Role: 2 days per week in our London office, with flexibility based on candidate needs and company arrangements.
