Description
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for the successful planning, execution, and closure of medium-to-large IT projects. This fully qualified delivery professional manages all aspects of the project lifecycle - including schedule, budget, risk, issues, and stakeholder engagement - working within a programme structure or as a standalone project lead. The Senior Project Manager applies consistent PMO standards and contributes to the ongoing improvement of delivery practice across the function.
- Lead the delivery of assigned IT projects - managing scope, schedule, budget, and quality from initiation through to closure, in line with PMO standards.
- Develop and maintain project plans - including detailed work breakdown structures, resource plans, dependency maps, and milestone schedules.
- Manage project RAID logs - maintaining accurate logs, implementing mitigation actions, and escalating to the Programme Manager or Head of Programme Delivery as appropriate.
- Manage project budgets - tracking actuals and forecasts against approved budgets, flagging variances, and working with Finance to maintain accurate financial reporting.
- Engage and manage stakeholders at all levels - providing regular, accurate project status updates; facilitating project boards and steering committees.
- Support or directly manage Project Managers working within the same programme or workstream - providing guidance and quality assurance on their plans and outputs.
- Apply and promote PMO frameworks and delivery standards - using approved templates, tools, and governance processes consistently.
- Contribute to lessons-learned reviews and continuous improvement - sharing insights from project delivery to improve methods and practices across the team.
Profile
A successful IT Project Manager should have:
- Degree-level education or equivalent professional experience. A project management qualification (e.g. PRINCE2 Practitioner, APM PMQ, PMP, or equivalent) is essential.
- The Senior Project Manager works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. They independently determine and develop their approach to project delivery within the agreed framework, receiving little instruction on day-to-day activities and general direction on new assignments.
- Decisions cover delivery approach, resource allocation within the project, risk treatment, and stakeholder communication. Significant scope, budget, or priority changes are escalated to the Programme Manager or Head of Programme Delivery and subject to governance approval.
- Contributes to completion of specific programmes and projects. This role has direct impact on delivery quality, project financials, and stakeholder confidence across assigned projects.
- Proficiency in project tooling (e.g. Smartsheet, MS Project, or equivalent).
