Team Leader to Community Field Service Engineers

Job summary

Due to department restructure a new and exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust to work as a Team Leader of our Community Field Engineers.

We are looking for an experienced engineer who will travel and spend occasional periods of time away from home delivering a high quality maintenance service to local community partnerships, national healthcare organisations and prisons.

You will be required to work closely and effectively with out external contracts managers planning and allocating work to the technical team, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge to complete their role to the required quality standards.

The successful candidate will be the face of Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust to a wide variety of clients. We are looking for someone who will take ownership of this role and be a positive representation who our team and clients can rely on.

A major part of the role is undertaking equipment PAT testing and medical equipment safety testing as well as providing a wide range of technical and maintenance services. One aspect of the role is physically demanding as this involves lifting weights to calibrate weighing scales.

Main duties of the job

The Medical Physics department provide a wide range of technical services and management of medical equipment throughout the Trust. Medical Physics also provide maintenance services for several community partnerships and private clinics both locally and on a more national level.

The purpose of the post holder is to provide technical services out in the field maintaining medical equipment for our community clients. The post holder will be expected to travel to client sites and provide these services working closely and effectively with other technical and clinical staff ensuring a high quality service is provided.

Key Responsibilities

  • To lead the technical team and assist with planning and allocating work to ensure agreed performance targets are met.
  • Working in a small team, jointly responsible for the repair and maintenance of a wide range of medical equipment on both Trust premises and external healthcare providers premises.
  • The post holder will be required to work independently at times and be responsible for their own record keeping required to fulfil the duties and responsibilities of the post.
  • To become familiar with the departments relevant statutory requirements, the clinical governance, risk management and quality audit policies and procedures of the Trust and the system(s) of accreditation in use.
  • Attend breakdown calls and undertake routine preventative maintenance/calibration work as directed to meet clinical needs.
  • Regularly carry out acceptance testing of new medical equipment.
  • As part of the Departments commitment to meeting the needs and requirements of our service users you will be required to undertake travel to client sites in order to maintain equipment as part of service level agreements.
  • Undertake fault finding and apply suitable fault-finding techniques to diagnose problems. In the event of complex faults outside the remit of the post holder, seek assistance in order to rectify faults.
  • To update and maintain accurately the medical equipment database.
  • To comply with the requirements of ISO:9001 and ensure the Q-Pulse quality management system and all procedures and protocols are adhered to.
  • Liaise with external companies to obtain information where required to effectively maintain equipment.
  • To identify areas and particular projects where there is the potential for improvement of quality to the benefit of the service provided by Medical Physics.
  • To provide cover when requested by the Head of Medical Devices or the Service Manager in other areas of Medical Physics services commensurate with the grade, qualifications, experience, and training.
  • To participate in the in-house and external training courses as identified by the post holder or team leader. The decision on which courses to attend will be taken on the basis of service needs.
  • Liaise with companies during trials and implementation of new equipment obtaining appropriate documentation to ensure patient safety is always maintained.
  • To drive a range of Trust vehicles in a safe and responsible manner adhering to all traffic and other legal regulations.
  • To undertake any other reasonable duties consistent with the grade as indicated by the services managers.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Awareness

Essential
  • Able to work without supervision and provide low level supervision to junior members of staff.
  • Able to exercise own initiative when dealing with issues within own area of competence.
  • Knowledge and experience using complex electronic test equipment.
  • A reasonable knowledge of health and safety principles applicable in a healthcare environment.
  • Understanding of hazards posed by, and precautions needed with:
  • Electricity
  • Medium currents
  • Workshop hazards
  • Fumes and Solvents
  • Tools and elevated temperatures
  • Cleaning agents and other hazardous materials (COSHH)
  • Must understand the nature of patient confidentiality.
Desirable
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation, national standards, professional and other guidelines (eg. ISO606001, ISO9001:2000, CQC & NHSLA standards, MHRA guidance, H&S, COSHH)

Experience

Essential
  • Working knowledge of maintenance of a wide range of electro-mechanical equipment.
  • Good knowledge of workshop practices and safety.
Desirable
  • Experience of maintaining medical equipment.
  • Previous experience of working in an acute NHS Trust.
  • Field based maintenance experience.

  • ONC/Level 4 science or engineering based subject
  • Or equivalent relevant competencies and working experience.

  • Up to date PAT testing certificate.
