Specialises in automation and integration; works with stakeholders to identify and scope opportunities for RPA, integration improvements and AI-assisted workflow enhancements.

Develops and builds automation flows from agreed specifications and expected benefits, primarily using Microsoft Power Automate (including Power Automate Desktop where applicable).

Supports the delivery and maintenance of integrations using Mirth Connect (Integration Engine), under the direction of the Principal Developer (Integration & Automation).

Implements and schedules flows, manages releases and environment changes.

Develops and runs tests to validate automations, integrations and AI-enabled components.

Maintains and supports existing automations and integrations; monitors and fixes failed flows, interface issues or platform problems.

Builds and maintains documentation and configuration to support reliable operations.

Main duties of the job

Builds, tests and maintains Robotic Process Automation (RPA) processes that reduce manual effort and burden on staff.

Works with stakeholders to identify opportunities, document expected benefits and deliver reliable, reusable flows and components.

Monitors automations in production, responds to failures and adapts flows to changing needs.

Maintains a central library of shared components and documentation so automations are robust, supportable and ready to scale.

Supports integration and automation delivery by contributing to interface configuration, troubleshooting and changes to data flows between systems.

Contributes to AI-enabled workflow enhancements by using Copilot Studio where appropriate and integrating approved AI services/endpoints (including MCP patterns where applicable), ensuring safe and compliant implementation.

Uses AI-assisted development approaches to improve delivery speed and quality, applying a human-in-the-loop model with appropriate governance, code review and testing.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • Write, amend, refactor and document RPA solutions to build approved automations, working with appropriate supervision and escalating as required.
  • Operate and maintain bots/flows in production; act as first-line support for automation issues and users.
  • Help assess processes for automation: analyse steps, document solutions and benefits, and prepare specifications.
  • Work with stakeholders to spot service improvement opportunities that enable automation and AI-assisted steps.
  • Quickly assess feasibility of new opportunities and feed into prioritisation.
  • Follow agreed standards and methods; advise colleagues which standards/processes apply to a given change.
  • Keep skills current; track technology changes, propose improvements and contribute to modern, well-engineered solutions.
  • Apply security controls and handle information safely; help identify risks and mitigations and escalate concerns appropriately.
  • Support and maintain live automations; troubleshoot using modern tools; package and deploy releases.
  • Estimate own effort and contribute to planning; follow the agreed delivery methodology and suggest improvements.
  • Produce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), run-books and user-facing guidance.
  • Support CAB activities by collating, tracking and presenting evidence for assurance.
  • Prepare project plans and status reports in line with internal governance.
  • Work closely with the Principal Developer (Integration & Automation) on workflows, deployment schedules, service impacts and expected benefits.
  • Communicate clearly with stakeholders and project teams to build commitment and support change.
  • Track delivery against targets; flag issues early and help adjust plans to stay on time, to quality and within budget.
  • Contribute to reliable day-to-day operations of the automation portfolio and supporting infrastructure.
  • Grow capability to build automations of increasing complexity with greater autonomy over time and support knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Support the delivery and maintenance of integrations by delivering Mirth interface configuration, data mappings/transformations and troubleshooting of failed messages/flows, under agreed standards and patterns.
  • Carry out routine monitoring of integration and automation services, escalating issues and contributing to incident/problem resolution activities.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for automations and integrations (e.g., runbooks, configurations, interface notes) to support reliable operations and change control.
  • Use AI-assisted development techniques to accelerate delivery and improve quality, while maintaining human oversight through code review, testing, documentation, secure configuration and governance.
  • Deliver AI-enabled workflow enhancements by building solutions using Copilot Studio where appropriate, and integrating approved AI services/endpoints into Power Automate flows or Mirth integration patterns (including MCP where applicable), ensuring traceability, safe handling of information and compliance with governance and security requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day coaching and support to junior team members/trainees, including task guidance, peer review/quality checks, and sharing good practice across automation and integration work.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • oEducated to degree level (computer/computing science) or equivalent level of qualification in IT/Digital, or equivalent level of experience.
Desirable
  • oRobotic Process Automation (RPA) accreditation or evidence of RPA learning, ideally including Microsoft Power Automate. oEvidence of relevant training/learning in integration technologies (e.g. Mirth Connect), API concepts or interoperability standards. oEvidence of learning in AI-assisted development and/or safe use of AI services in workflow solutions (e.g. Copilot Studio and MCP patterns).

Experience

Essential
  • oPrevious experience working with industry standard coding languages / software development platforms. oAn understanding of RPA and best practice delivery. oAn awareness of change impact and the effect on the ability to automate or the need to update existing automations. oAn understanding of industry standard approaches to exceptions and error handling. oExperience of documenting solutions and system dependencies. oExperience of system management and support (e.g. supporting live automations and/or integration services, troubleshooting and assisting with releases).
Desirable
  • oAware of the strategic direction of the NHS and structures in place to support it. oPrevious experience working with RPA platforms (Power Automate Desktop, Automation Anywhere, UiPath or Blue Prism). oKnowledge of computer program design methods and techniques. oKnowledge of streamlining principles / concepts. oExperience supporting or contributing to integrations (e.g. Mirth interfaces, APIs, data feeds, workflow integrations). oExperience contributing to AI-enabled workflow enhancements (e.g. using Copilot Studio and/or approved AI services/endpoints in automations or workflow solutions, including MCP patterns where applicable).
