Job summary

INSIGHT - the Eye & Oculomics Health Data Research Hub at Moorfields Eye Hospital is the world's largest ophthalmic bio-resource, with over 30 million eye images linked to clinical data. We provide approved researchers with access to rich datasets, supported by data curation expertise, AI infrastructure, and patient involvement.

In 2025, INSIGHT at Moorfields were successfully awarded a grant by the Medical Research Council to scale INSIGHT's infrastructure across the NHS to create a truly national resource that can support diverse research, improve clinical outcomes, and foster innovation in eye health.

To deliver on project objectives, INSIGHT is seeking to recruit to a new post of Data Scientist and Artificial Intelligence (AI) Specialist to work with INSIGHT leadership to develop and deliver a data and AI development strategy for the project.

The post-holder will collaborate closely with clinical researchers, other data scientists, software engineering specialists and academics in a multi-disciplinary team to further develop INSIGHT's health data research assets, including datasets and predictive model in eye care and Oculomics.

Main duties of the job

This post will be part of the Project Leadership Team and contribute to expanding and scaling the INSIGHT's Research Data Platform working across the national data linkages workstream, and ensuring compliance with data security, governance and quality standards.

The post-holder will be responsible for:

Developing new statistical models and algorithms to improve eye health and Oculomics research outcomes.

Producing cutting edge research in applied AI/machine learning and modelling clinical datasets.

Developing relationships with AI researchers in SME, academic and clinical partners to further develop project.

Championing ethical use of clinical datasets in research to support the local patient population needs.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

1. Work with the Project Leadership Team to develop and deliver a data and AI development strategy for the project.

2. Use proprietary INSIGHT Research Data Platform technology to scope and curate new datasets to serve project needs in compliance with INSIGHT research ethics and processes, Trust guidance and best practice.

3. Lead on analysis of statistical models and algorithms, including quality standards, bias-risk assessments and validation, and evaluate and report on the predictive utility and interpretability of different tools.

4. Review current development techniques and identify and recommend opportunities for improvement and validating of revised/new methods that align to Agile project management.

5. Provide advice and expertise for the generation and regular update to the project workplan, including across DevOps and Machine Learning techniques.

6. Coordinate with data and software engineers and informatics teams regarding data and technical requirements for project delivery and where necessary manage any arising conflicts and/or change in requirements.

7. Provide professional, technical, advice, leadership and training in research data analysis and AI training methods for colleagues.

8. Collaborate with project clinical and academic leads in writing abstracts, articles and other publications that visualise data and AI outcomes in a meaningful way for a range of stakeholders, including for high-impact scientific journals and presentations at national and international scientific conferences.

9. Collaborate effectively with the broader project team and other clinical/research staff to identify and communicate opportunities for new funding, sharing research resources, and preparing reports and presentations for internal review and external review.

10. Demonstrate a high level of accountability for professional actions and decision making.

11. Keep abreast of the latest health data, technical and scientific research developments and their applications in medicine and associated fields.

12. Actively promote research and innovation through INSIGHT at Moorfields.

13. Any other duties that may be required by the Director of INSIGHT and/or Chief Operating Officer for INSIGHT.

The post-holder will be based at Moorfields in central London. There may be occasional travel nationally and internationally, subject to requirements.

Person Specification

Education/Qualifications

Essential
  • A PhD or masters with equivalent professional experience in a field with relevance to health data science.
Desirable
  • Project management qualification (e.g., PRINCE2).

Knowledge and Experience

Essential
  • Demonstrable experience in biomedical and health data science or epidemiology, including medical imaging techniques and clinical data structures in Ophthalmology.
  • Expertise building statistical models, use of machine learning using Python libraries, and MLOps tools for optimisation.
  • Experience of data mining and analysing electronic health records (EHR) and knowledge of clinical terminologies (i.e., SNOMED-CT).
  • Experience with one or more data management tools (e.g., SQL).
  • Demonstrable use of programming in collaborative and reproducible analysis pipelines.
  • Experience using data visualisation for understanding and communicating large or complex data to non-technical audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to assimilate new ideas and work with problem owners to turn ideas into practical, applied techniques, and willingness to continue to learn new techniques.
  • Understanding of data collection, governance, verification and processing within the NHS and/or for health research.
  • Experience of collaborating on academic writing and publications (e.g., abstracts, articles for scientific/specialist journals and conferences).
Desirable
  • Familiarity with multiple paradigms for mathematical representation of complex systems (e.g., differential equation modelling and mathematical programming and optimisation).
  • Experience with cloud computing (e.g. GCP, Azure ML, AWS SageMaker), containerisation (Docker, Kubernetes), or version control (Git).
