UI/UX Engineer (React / TypeScript) – Part-Time

Contract Type: Time & Materials

Duration: Initial 2 months (Extension highly likely)

Rate: £450-500 per day (pro rata)

Start: ASAP (2 week onboarding)

Commitment: ~8 hours per week (flexible, with some daytime availability for meetings)

Location: Remote (UK-based)

We’re supporting a consultancy delivering a large-scale data and technology programme within a regulated, government-aligned environment.

As part of a recent service transition, they’ve identified a need for UI/UX expertise to support the handover, assessment and improvement of an existing front-end application developed by a third party.

The Opportunity

This is a flexible, part-time contract (circa 3–10 hours per week) ideal for someone looking to complement an existing engagement.

You’ll play a key role in:

  • Reviewing and understanding an existing UI codebase
  • Supporting technical handover sessions with incumbent developers
  • Assessing code quality, structure, and scalability
  • Providing recommendations to improve usability, accessibility and performance
  • Helping shape the roadmap for ongoing UI development and support

Due to the nature of the engagement, there is a strong need for someone who can quickly get up to speed and provide immediate value.

There is also strong potential for this to evolve into a longer-term retainer or expanded scope as the programme matures.

Tech Environment

  • React (modern, hooks-based)
  • TypeScript
  • Vite (SPA architecture)
  • Context API (state management)
  • Biome (linting)
  • GitHub Actions (CI/CD)

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong experience with React and TypeScript in production environments
  • Experience working with modern front-end architectures (SPA)
  • Ability to review and assess existing codebases and provide clear, actionable recommendations
  • Comfortable working in ambiguous / discovery-led environments
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical stakeholders

Strongly preferred:

  • Experience working with GDS (Government Digital Service) standards
  • (Important for hitting the ground running in a government-aligned environment with limited onboarding time)

Desirable:

  • Experience with Vite or similar modern front-end build tooling
  • Experience with design systems and accessibility standards (WCAG)
  • Exposure to CI/CD pipelines (e.g. GitHub Actions)
  • Experience inheriting or auditing third-party developed applications

Why This Role?

  • Flexible, low-hour commitment alongside other work
  • Opportunity to influence and shape a live production system
  • Long-term potential within a multi-year programme
  • Work with a modern front-end stack in a meaningful, regulated environment
