RPG Developer
An established UK financial institution is seeking an RPG Developer to join its expanding technology team at a pivotal moment of transformation. With a major platform modernisation and migration programme underway, this is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of their core banking systems. The organisation has a long-standing reputation for personalised service delivered through a decentralised branch network, and it is now investing heavily in evolving its technology landscape to support more modern, customer-focused ways of working.
In this role, you will be involved in designing, developing and enhancing components of the core banking platform, converting architectural direction and business requirements into clear technical specifications, and producing clean, modern and maintainable RPG code across both fixed and free-format styles. You will participate in agile ceremonies and present your work to both business and technical stakeholders, as well as prepare user guides, training materials and technical documentation. The position requires strong debugging and troubleshooting ability, with the confidence to assess existing applications, update legacy components and introduce new features aligned to ongoing development needs. Collaboration with analysts, architects and other engineers is central to the role, ensuring that all development follows agreed standards, governance frameworks and secure engineering practices while meeting expected timelines.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience as an RPG developer with strong knowledge of SQL (including embedded SQL), familiarity with modern IBMi development techniques such as modules, service programs and activation groups, and hands-on experience using IBM Rational Developer. A solid understanding of software design principles, good analytical and problem-solving capability, strong communication skills and a meticulous approach to detail and time management are also essential. Experience of Agile delivery environments, a willingness to continually improve engineering outcomes, and a degree in computer science or a related field will be advantageous. Additional exposure to Citrix server administration or vulnerability management would be beneficial.
This is a rare chance to join an organisation at the start of a major technological evolution, contributing directly to the redesign of systems, processes and services that will define the future of banking for its customers. For an RPG Developer who wants to be part of a modernisation journey rather than purely maintaining existing systems, this role offers both challenge and opportunity within a supportive and forward-looking technology team.
