IT Technical Delivery Manager

The Opportunity

I'm working with a well-established organisation operating within the UK Defence and critical infrastructure sector who are looking to appoint an experienced IT Technical Delivery Manager.

This is a broad and influential role working closely with the Head of IT, helping shape technology strategy while taking ownership of the successful delivery and ongoing improvement of business-critical IT services.

You'll sit at the intersection of technical delivery, IT operations and business change, leading technology projects while ensuring the underlying infrastructure, cloud services and core platforms remain secure, resilient and fit for purpose.

This isn't a pure Project Manager position. They're looking for someone with genuine technical breadth who can understand the technology, challenge suppliers, engage senior stakeholders and successfully take solutions from concept through to implementation and operational delivery.

The Role

As IT Technical Delivery Manager, you'll be responsible for:

  • Supporting the Head of IT in developing and delivering the organisation's IT strategy and technology roadmap, deputising when required.
  • Leading the design, implementation and ongoing improvement of secure, scalable and cost-effective technology solutions.
  • Overseeing IT infrastructure, cloud services, connectivity and core technology platforms, ensuring strong availability, performance and security.
  • Leading significant IT transformation, infrastructure and technology change programmes from initial requirements through to implementation and handover.
  • Working with stakeholders across the organisation to understand operational requirements and translate them into effective technology solutions.
  • Managing third-party technology suppliers and service providers, ensuring strong performance, value for money and contractual compliance.
  • Ensuring suppliers and solutions operate in accordance with appropriate security and governance standards.
  • Taking responsibility for major incident management, coordinating technical teams and suppliers to minimise disruption to users.
  • Supporting disaster recovery, resilience and business continuity planning across the technology estate.
  • Overseeing vulnerability management and supporting the wider organisation's approach to information and cyber security.
  • Identifying opportunities to modernise technology, improve processes and enhance the overall user experience.
  • Driving continual service improvement and ensuring technology delivers measurable value to the wider business.

What We're Looking For:

We're looking for someone who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to successfully deliver complex technology change.

You'll ideally have:

  • Strong technical knowledge across IT infrastructure, cloud technologies, IT service management and information security.
  • Proven experience delivering significant technology transformation and change programmes.
  • Experience implementing new IT platforms, infrastructure or technology solutions that have improved business performance.
  • Strong understanding of modern Microsoft and cloud-based environments.
  • Experience managing third-party suppliers, technology partners and outsourced service providers.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to work with both technical specialists and senior leadership.
  • Experience managing risk and delivering technology change while minimising disruption to operational users.
  • A customer-focused approach to IT service delivery.
  • Strong planning, analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • The ability to lead, influence and support others without necessarily relying on direct line-management authority.

Qualifications & Knowledge

Ideally, you'll have:

  • ITIL awareness or certification.
  • Microsoft certification or equivalent technical qualifications/experience.
  • Project Management qualification or strong demonstrable project delivery experience.
  • Knowledge of IT governance, information security frameworks and audit processes.
  • A relevant degree would be advantageous but isn't essential where equivalent experience can be demonstrated.

The Environment

You'll be joining an organisation delivering critical services within a secure Defence environment, where the availability, resilience and security of technology have a direct impact on wider operational delivery.

The position offers significant exposure to senior leadership and the opportunity to influence how technology develops across the organisation, while remaining close enough to the technical environment to make a tangible impact.

Experience within Defence, Government, critical infrastructure, facilities management, utilities or another highly regulated environment would be particularly relevant, although applications are welcomed from candidates in other complex enterprise environments.

Additional Information

Appointment will be subject to the successful completion of the required security clearance.

The organisation is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, with all appointments made on merit through a fair and transparent recruitment process.
