Business Intelligence & Analytics Lead

Job summary

The Business Intelligence & Analytics Lead is responsible for leading and developing the NEMS Business Intelligence & Analytics function. The post holder will provide operational leadership and professional expertise across business intelligence, analytics, reporting, data quality and data engineering activities, ensuring NEMS has trusted data, actionable insight and effective reporting capabilities to support operational, clinical and strategic decision making.

Main duties of the job

The role will lead the Business Intelligence & Analytics Team and oversee the development of reporting, analytics and data platform capabilities. Working closely with senior leaders, operational teams, clinicians and system partners, the post holder will drive improvements in data quality, business intelligence and analytical maturity to support service improvement, performance management and organisational planning. The post holder will support the safe and effective adoption of artificial intelligence, automation and advanced analytics across NEMS, contributing to the governance, validation and evaluation of new technologies and analytical approaches to ensure they deliver clinical, operational and organisational benefit.

Job responsibilities

Main Duties of The Role Leadership and Team Management:

Act as the organisational lead for Business Intelligence and Analytics, providing professional guidance and specialist expertise across NEMS.

Provide specialist advice on reporting, analytics and data management to colleagues across the organisation.

Lead and develop the Business Intelligence & Analytics Team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality reporting, analytics and data services.

Manage team priorities, workload planning and performance to ensure delivery against organisational requirements.

Maintain oversight of day-to-day data engineering activities and ensure developments align with business requirements.

Support the Head of Digital & Performance in delivering data, reporting and analytics priorities, programmes and objectives.

Establish and maintain reporting standards, definitions, documentation and quality assurance processes.

Champion good data governance practices and work with teams across NEMS to improve data quality and consistency.

Work collaboratively with Information Governance colleagues to ensure the appropriate and compliant use of organisational data.

Support the development of technical and analytical capability across the Business Intelligence & Analytics Team.

Ensure appropriate documentation, standard operating procedures and knowledge transfer arrangements are maintained across the Business Intelligence & Analytics function.

Prioritise reporting and analytical resources to ensure delivery against organisational objectives and timescales.

Lead recruitment, appraisal, performance management and personal development activities across the Business Intelligence & Analytics Team Business Intelligence, Analytics & Data Management:

Lead the design, development and ongoing improvement of reports, dashboards and analytical products used across NEMS services.

Oversee production and quality assurance of routine and ad hoc reporting outputs.

Analyse operational, clinical and contractual performance data, identifying trends, risks and opportunities that support informed decision making.

Develop reporting that brings together activity, performance, workforce, quality and clinical outcome data, enabling NEMS to understand the relationship between operational performance and quality of care, rather than reviewing measures in isolation.

Ensure robust data quality processes are in place and support continuous improvement of organisational data quality.

Support the development and maintenance of organisational data standards, definitions and reporting documentation to improve consistency and confidence in organisational reporting.

Identify and deliver opportunities to automate reporting, validation and analytical processes to improve efficiency and reduce manual effort.

Evaluate emerging analytics, automation and artificial intelligence technologies, supporting their safe and appropriate adoption in line with organisational governance, information governance and clinical safety requirements.

Work closely with operational, clinical and corporate teams to understand reporting requirements and provide insight that supports service delivery and performance improvement.

Work with service leads and operational managers to improve data quality, reporting consistency and use of data to support service improvement.

Build effective relationships with commissioners, system partners and other external stakeholders.

Present complex information and analysis to a wide range of technical and non-technical audiences.

Provide analysis and performance information that supports service redesign, quality improvement and operational decision making.

Support organisational planning, workforce planning and service development through robust data analysis and reporting.

Person Specification

Skills and Knowledge

Essential
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of business intelligence, analytics and reporting methodologies.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience of Microsoft Power BI, SQL, modern reporting and analytics technologies.
  • Knowledge of data architecture, data warehousing, data engineering and reporting infrastructure, with the ability to lead the development of data platforms that support business intelligence and analytics services.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex datasets and explain findings clearly to a range of audiences.
  • Understanding of data governance, data quality and information
  • management principles.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of NHS datasets, performance frameworks and operational reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of cloud-based data warehouse and analytics platforms such as Snowflake.

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject, or equivalent experience
