We're recruiting for a Senior Interaction Designer to join our growing and supportive user-centred design community to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary agile teams, alongside user researchers, developers, service designers, product owners and others.

Main duties of the job

As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will lead on our approach to enable users to interact with all of our digital services, in terms of both overall flow and at the level of individual design elements. You will have an inclusive, user-centred approach and enjoy adapting and learning at pace. As an experienced designer, you will work with minimal support, influence others, and mentor other team members from our design community.

We're working in a hybrid way, spending time both home and office working.This position can be based from either of our offices in Greater Manchester or Newcastle upon Tyne.

In this role, you are accountable for:

Personal Qualities, Knowledge and Skills

Essential
  • Excellent communication skills to listen and respond to the needs of a range of audiences and interpret them clearly for both audiences
  • Both proactive and reactive in communication. Able to engage in various feedback types, choosing the right style at the appropriate time and ensuring the discussion and decision stick
  • Able to cope in complex environments, prioritise effectively and identify and work within constraints.
  • Able to apply best practices, deal with challenging situations and adopt a flexible approach to work and working hours
  • Specialist knowledge of interaction design, with an ability to demonstrate knowledge of usercentred interaction design.
  • Knowledge of and passion for user-centred design practices for both public-facing and internal services and applications.
  • Proven ability to transfer and develop skills and knowledge into new areas at short notice.
  • Knowledge of accessibility standards and guidelines and how to apply these standards to your work and others work.

  • Proven experience working as a designer supporting a product team and working with users, managers and senior stakeholders to develop design concepts
  • Experience in setting direction, embedding good practice, and making important decisions based on research to improve products and services
  • Proven industry experience of applying design knowledge in interaction design and applying that to real-world applications
  • Expert in designing user interfaces. Able to demonstrate interaction design skills and fulfil user needs in your designs.
  • Able to demonstrate your process in designing and building new digital services or improving existing ones.
  • Experience in working effectively with cross disciplinary teams and ensuring that making design decisions is based on design knowledge, user research and knowing the user journey.
  • Skilled in creating prototypes and concepts to explore potential solutions and meet requirements.
  • Experienced in strategic thinking and providing design consulting and leadership in any relevant area. You identify and implement solutions for assisted digital.
  • Experience in making complex things simple for users by distilling complex data and information into understandable and straightforward forms
Desirable
  • Experience in working in an agile/lean development process.
  • Experience in designing for users with low digital skills and/or designing for users with physical and cognitive impairments.
  • Experience in contributing to "design systems". For example, producing self-service systems for non-Designers, using common patterns, components and elements.
  • Experienced in leading and mentoring staff within and outside your specialism

Qualifications

Essential
  • Professionally qualified to degree level or equivalent professional experience or willingness to work towards
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
Desirable
  • Recognised design qualification, for example in Service Design, Interaction Design, Design, Human-Centred Design, Ergonomics, etc. or Design Management or Management (e.g. MBA, Postgraduate certificate in Management).
  • Additional practitioner level qualifications in Design, User Research, or Design (or equivalent) or related knowledge.
  • Management and leadership qualification.
  • Evidence of on-going relevant postgraduate qualification.
