IT Field Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced IT Field Engineer to join a dynamic London-based team supporting both educational sectors and commercial clients. You will act as the primary on-site engineer, handling complex IT infrastructure work independently, maintaining excellent client relationships, and delivering high-quality solutions.

This is a hands-on, field-based position, requiring confidence in client-facing interactions and the ability to manage your workload efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Delivery:

  • Install, configure, and commission Microsoft-based IT systems and network infrastructure at customer sites.
  • Set up and manage enterprise-grade server hardware (Dell, HPE, etc.), including firmware, RAID, and OS installations.
  • Provide on-site support and guidance to schools and other clients, including migrations to Google Workspace for Education and related platforms.
  • Build, upgrade, and migrate Windows Server environments (2012–2025), covering Active Directory, Group Policy, file and print services, and core server roles.
  • Perform planned infrastructure upgrades, server replacements, and customer migrations according to project plans, escalating risks as needed.
  • Attend regular customer visits across London and the South East to deliver projects and resolve technical issues.
  • Support client relocations, system upgrades, and change requests.

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Coordinate closely with Service Desk and Project teams to ensure smooth service delivery and handovers.
  • Keep clients informed throughout projects, escalating technical risks or issues clearly when additional input is required.

Operational Excellence:

  • Maintain accurate documentation for every site visit, including job sheets and asset records.
  • Ensure adherence to technical standards, health and safety guidelines, and operational procedures.
  • Manage your tools, test equipment, and vehicle inventory to ensure readiness for each day.

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 3 years of field-based IT experience, ideally in a managed services or project-driven environment; experience in education is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience delivering Windows Server installations, upgrades, and migrations (2012–2025), including:
  • Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy (including printer deployment)
  • Hyper-V and ESXi management
  • Firewall configuration (SonicWall, WatchGuard, Fortinet, or DrayTek)
  • Enterprise-grade server hardware (Dell, HPE, or similar)
  • Strong knowledge of Windows client OS and Microsoft 365 administration (Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Intune, MFA, SSO).
  • Solid understanding of IP networking, VLANs, and wireless setups; experience with VoIP/UC platforms is advantageous.

Qualifications & Certifications

  • Vendor or manufacturer certifications are desirable (Microsoft, CompTIA, Cisco, etc.).
  • Full UK driving licence required.

Personal Attributes

  • Professional, reliable, and confident working directly with clients.
  • Self-sufficient and organized, able to manage workloads independently and escalate when necessary.
  • Adaptable to different environments, customers, and technologies.
  • Excellent time management with a commitment to quality delivery.
  • Willingness to travel across London and the South East, with flexibility for project requirements.

This Role May Not Be the Right Fit If...

  • Your experience has been limited to service desk or remote support roles without regular on-site infrastructure work.
  • You lack hands-on experience building, upgrading, or migrating Windows Server environments in the field.
  • You are not comfortable leading on-site projects and communicating directly with clients.
