Field Engineer
Job Title: Pre-Sales Engineer - Networking SolutionsLocation: Birmingham (Hybrid)Salary: £35,000
Role Overview This role is ideal for an energetic, customer-focused Pre-Sales Engineer with hands-on experience in networking and data centre technologies. You'll work closely with internal sales teams and channel partners to understand technical requirements, design tailored solutions and promote key vendor technologies.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping opportunities, providing technical credibility in client engagements, and supporting business growth by translating complex technology into clear commercial outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
Solution Design & Architecture
- Assist in designing and validating LAN/WAN setups, including basic switching, routing, and wireless deployments.
- Support the creation of simple high-level and low-level design diagrams using vendor guidelines.
- Help document data centre and virtualisation solutions, including servers, storage, and backup setups.
- Assist in configuring secure hybrid cloud environments with guidance from senior engineers (Azure, VMware, Hyper-V).
- Support firewall, VPN, and network security appliance configuration under supervision.
Technical Engagement & Pre-Sales Support
- Support sales teams with technical discovery and requirement gathering.
- Assist in delivering product demos, presentations, and proof-of-concepts.
- Help translate customer requirements into technical specifications and basic BOMs.
- Liaise with vendors and distributors to confirm solution compatibility and standards compliance.
Vendor & Product Enablement
- Maintain awareness of vendor products and updates (e.g., HPE, Aruba, Cisco, Dell, Fortinet, VMware).
- Assist in setting up demo environments for internal use and customer demonstrations.
- Support senior engineers in internal knowledge sharing and training sessions.
Collaboration & Project Handover
- Work with post-sales engineers to ensure smooth handover of solutions.
- Contribute to configuration guides, deployment templates, and basic documentation.
- Assist in building reference architectures and reusable solution templates.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Some experience in pre-sales, solution design, or technical support within the IT channel, MSP, or vendor environment.
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals (routing, switching, wireless) and basic data centre technologies (servers, storage, virtualisation).
- Awareness of firewalls, VPNs, and hybrid cloud environments.
- Good technical documentation, presentation, and communication skills.
Preferred:
- Any relevant vendor certifications (e.g., Cisco CCNA, HPE/Aruba ACMP, VMware VCP).
- Familiarity with Azure networking, VMware, or HPE/Dell infrastructure.
- Basic experience using Visio or similar diagramming tools for technical designs.
