Role Summary

  • Job Title: Senior Network Infrastructure Engineer
  • Location: Newcastle (Hybrid: approximately 2 days remote)
  • Salary: Up to £50,000

As a Senior Network Infrastructure Engineer (Service Desk), you will support a range of environments - from older on-premises systems to modern cloud infrastructures. Working in a Managed Service Provider environment, you will resolve escalated incidents, troubleshoot complex network and cloud connectivity issues, and help ensure reliable, secure service delivery to clients. Key technologies include traditional networking, virtualisation, and Azure cloud (including desktop virtualisation).

Key Duties

  • Act as escalation point for major or complex network & infrastructure incidents from the service desk.
  • Support client environments that vary: legacy on-premises, hybrid, full cloud.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot LAN/WAN, Wi-Fi, VPN, firewall setups across multiple customer sites.
  • Manage Azure environments, especially virtual desktop solutions: session hosts, image deployment, user originations, connectivity.
  • Install, configure, and maintain network hardware (switches, routers, firewalls, access points) from vendors like Cisco, Fortinet, HP, and Aruba.
  • Design and maintain secure, scalable, resilient network architectures in cooperation with clients and external vendors.
  • Contribute to modernization and migration projects-moving from older infrastructure to hybrid/cloud solutions.
  • Keep up-to-date documentation for each client: network diagrams, baselines, change logs.
  • Mentor and support first- and second-line service desk engineers, handling escalations.

Qualifications & Background

  • Bachelor's degree in IT, Computer Science or related field (or equivalent experience).
  • 3-5 years' experience in network engineering or IT infrastructure support in a service provider setting.
  • Demonstrable experience with hybrid infrastructure: on-premises, virtualised, cloud.
  • Useful certifications include: CCNA / CCNP, Azure Network / Virtual Desktop, and other network/security accreditations.

Technical Competencies

  • Strong grasp of networking fundamentals: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, subnetting.
  • Experience with network hardware from multiple vendors (Cisco, Fortinet, HP, Aruba, etc.).
  • Firewall & VPN configuration/troubleshooting.
  • Proficient with Azure solutions: virtual desktops, VNETs, network security, connectivity methods.
  • Familiarity with legacy systems (AD, Hyper-V / VMware, RDS).
  • Good with monitoring tools (e.g. PRTG, SolarWinds, Zabbix, Azure Monitor).
  • Knowledge of security best practices relevant to network & cloud infrastructure.
