Infrastructure Engineer

About the Role: A growing organisation is seeking a skilled Infrastructure Engineer with a security focus to join its IT team. This role involves managing and enhancing both on-premises and cloud-based infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Linux environments, network management, and security best practices. You'll support day-to-day operations, contribute to infrastructure projects, and work closely with security leadership.Key Responsibilities:
  • Network Management: Configure and maintain LAN, WAN, and VPN connections to ensure reliable performance.

  • Server Administration: Manage Linux-based on-prem servers, including patching, updates, and backups.

  • Cloud/Hybrid Infrastructure: Support secure integration of on-prem infrastructure with platforms like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

  • Security Measures: Implement and monitor protocols such as firewalls (e.g., Sophos XGS), intrusion detection, and endpoint security.

  • Infrastructure Projects: Contribute to upgrades, migrations, and system integration initiatives.

  • Disaster Recovery: Test and maintain DR and backup plans for data resilience.

  • Monitoring & Optimisation: Utilise tools like Nagios, Zabbix, or SolarWinds to ensure high availability and performance.

  • Documentation & Compliance: Maintain accurate documentation and support compliance standards.

Person Specification:

Experience:

  • 3–5 years in infrastructure engineering or network administration.

  • Hands-on Linux server management experience.

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and hybrid environments (AWS, Azure, Wasabi – desirable).

Technical Skills:

  • Networking: Strong grasp of TCP/IP, VPNs, VLANs, DNS, DHCP.

  • Linux: Deep experience with Ubuntu or similar.

  • Virtualisation: Familiarity with VMware, KVM, and Proxmox.

  • Cloud: Understanding of cloud security, permissions, and utilisation.

  • Security: Exposure to vulnerability management, IDS/IPS systems, and general infrastructure hardening.

  • Automation: Scripting skills in Bash or Python.

  • Threat Hunting: Some exposure to Wazuh and firewall analytics (training provided if needed).

Soft Skills:

  • Analytical thinking and strong troubleshooting ability.

  • Clear communication across technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal collaboration.

  • Accuracy and attention to detail.

  • Effective time and task prioritisation.

Additional Requirements:
  • Willingness to join an on-call rota.

  • Flexibility to travel to data centres or sites when needed.
