Information Governance Specialist (M365)

Role: Senior Information Manager / M365 Information Governance Specialist

Contract length: 12 months

Day rate: £650 - £675

Location: Remote, with occasional travel to London as required

IR35: In scope

Security clearance: BPSS

This role sits on a major M365 programme focused on implementing information and security controls to manage the corporate record effectively within M365. It would suit someone who understands information and records management in depth and can translate those principles into practical, workable solutions across tools like SharePoint, Teams and OneDrive.

Where you will add value

  • Act as the subject matter expert for information and records controls within M365 - from discovery and design through to implementation and assurance.
  • Lead the design of information lifecycle mechanisms, including retention schedules and record labelling strategies aligned with policy, legislation and risk appetite.
  • Define clear, implementable information governance requirements for M365 apps, translating records management needs into designs that technical colleagues can build.
  • Shape and embed a revised M365 information culture by driving user engagement, training and practical guidance to improve day-to-day behaviours.
  • Identify information risks, gaps and edge cases (such as exclusions or complex retention scenarios) and escalate them through appropriate governance channels.
  • Contribute to policy, standards and guidance that ensure sustainable information governance within M365.
  • Provide assurance and expert advice at programme boards and stakeholder forums on information management decisions.

What the client is looking for

  • Strong knowledge of information and records management principles, including ISO15489.
  • Proven experience applying information governance controls within the M365 environment.
  • Public sector background, ideally with substantial records management responsibility.
  • Experience designing information lifecycle models, including retention and labelling strategies.
  • A balanced, non-"too techy" profile - able to work with technology teams but focused on governance, risk, policy and user behaviour.

The client also operates guaranteed interview schemes for certain candidates (e.g. under disability confident and armed forces covenant), which can further streamline the process for eligible applicants.
