Job summary
Posts are available in the Histopathology Department. This presents an exciting opportunity to be part of an excellent team working in a busy modern teaching hospital laboratory. The department has a workload of around 80 000 surgical requests per year and covers a wide range of routine and specialised services to enable a diagnosis to be identified.
The department has recently had a full equipment upgrade, and is working to implementing a fully digital reporting service.

This is an excellent opportunity to work with a committed team of office, laboratory and Consultant Pathologist staff.
Main duties of the job
- The successful applicant will work in all areas of the service, on rotation with other staff. This post will provide an excellent opportunity to gain experience in routine histopathology including:
- Mohs sectioning and frozen section technique.
- Immunocytochemistry.
- Specialist section cutting/embedding
- Category A specimen transfer

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Either a Institute of Biomedical Science Support Staff Certificate of Achievement Level 2 or Foundation degree in Biomedical Science (or Healthcare Science) or working towards. If working towards, the post holder will be expected to attain the qualification within a period specified by the department
Experience
- Able to make decisions on the suitability of samples for diagnostic testing, including making judgements relating to specimen reception, section cutting, embedding, processing and staining.
- Possess an in depth knowledge of histopathology techniques performed within this discipline.
- Possess IT skills, be able to use the laboratory information management system for data entry and queries relating to specimen progression. May also use spreadsheets to input data. Have knowledge of the Data Protection Act.
Skills
- Manual dexterity where attention to detail and accuracy is essential and able to demonstrate excellent hand/eye coordination. (Section cutting, embedding and specimen handling in cut-up). Basic keyboard skills.
- Time management skills, with the ability to use initiative and prioritise own work tasks to ensure efficient through put of work.
