Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and motivated Senior Manager to lead our cloud and database teams, ensuring optimal performance, security, and reliability of services. In this key role, you will manage the architecture, deployment, and maintenance of cloud and database solutions to support organisational needs.

As Team Manager for Cloud and Databases, you will oversee the design and operation of scalable, cost-efficient cloud infrastructure, including Azure environments, and ensure they meet performance and security standards. You will also lead database management, covering architecture, implementation, tuning, and disaster recovery.

Team leadership is central to the role. You will mentor Database Administrators and Cloud Engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. You'll work closely with internal stakeholders, digital teams, and external partners to meet business and clinical needs.

You will manage budgets, resources, and performance metrics, monitor service levels, respond to incidents, and drive ongoing improvement to maintain secure and reliable infrastructure.

Main duties of the job

  • You will lead the design and implementation of cloud and database solutions across NCA sites, ensuring alignment with NHS architecture principles and industry best practices. This includes managing the deployment and configuration of cloud resources, database servers, storage systems, and associated infrastructure components.
  • You will develop and maintain disaster recovery and backup strategies to ensure data resilience and business continuity. Regular audits, performance tuning, and system upgrades will be part of your remit to maintain optimal performance and reliability.
  • Your role will involve overseeing database migrations, patching, and the integration of new technologies. You will provide technical guidance to project teams and stakeholders, ensuring that cloud and database services support organisational objectives.
  • You will maintain comprehensive documentation and operational procedures for all cloud and database environments. Additionally, you will track emerging technologies and assess their potential impact on service delivery, recommending innovations that enhance scalability and performance.
  • Reporting to senior leadership, you will provide insights into service performance, risks, and improvement plans. Your strategic vision and technical expertise will be instrumental in shaping the digital infrastructure of the NCA and supporting the delivery of high-quality healthcare services.

Qualifications

Essential
  • Relevant master's degree or equivalent, or ability to demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Relevant high level subject matter qualification (e.g. Microsoft, Oracle, Google) or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience.
  • Relevant Leadership Qualification or equivalent knowledge, skills and experience. (e.g. ILM/CMI/Degree)
  • Project Management Qualification (Prince2, SCRUM, etc)
  • ITIL Qualification
  • Evidence of continued professional development
Desirable
  • Professional, managerial and leadership qualification or equivalent experience at senior management level.

Knowledge, Training & Experience

Essential
  • Proven experience in team management, work scheduling, performance reviews and strategic improvement.
  • Significant experience of supporting and implementing enterprise grade solutions (Cisco, Citrix, VMWare, Microsoft, Azure).
  • Knowledge of budgetary management.
  • Ability to author clear concise reports, letters, minutes, and documents using a good standard of English.
  • Record of performance management and delivery of projects, targets, policy implementation, change management.
  • Experience and knowledge of the technical and business requirements, specification, procurement and implementation of enterprise IT solutions.
  • Good knowledge of data protection GDPR/DSPT and other relevant legislation standards.
  • Able to identify and resolve complex issues and problems across a broad range of IT solutions to an advanced level.
  • Able to evaluate and define use of new IT solutions through research and development and build of test configurations.
  • Significant experience of delivering, supporting and troubleshooting complex multi-vendor technical infrastructures.
  • Some knowledge of common multiple subject matter systems (e.g. Microsoft, Unix, Linux, OS X based databases).

  • Knowledge and understanding of NHS /experience working within a healthcare setting.
  • Experience in contributing to large, strategic technical transformation projects in a complex IT environment.
  • Demonstrable and practical experience at a senior level, in public or private sector, of delivering transformational change to business technologies and processes, to deliver cost savings and service improvements for customers.
