Job summary

The Head of Business Insight is responsible for leading the Business Insights team, providing strategic direction and fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and professional growth. This role is critical in developing advanced data science methodologies and leveraging data to generate actionable insights that supports clinical and operational decision-making across the Group.

The role operates at a Group level and the postholder will have accountability across sites in Hull, Grimsby and Scunthorpe which will feature a combination of on-premise and remote working.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will manage and optimise comprehensive data models and architecture, ensuring scalability and alignment with strategic objectives. The role will lead the collaboration with Business Intelligence and IT teams to enhance real-time analysis, accurate forecasting, and the management of resources. The postholder will lead the development of and refinement of machine learning capabilities and apply these to modelling scenarios within clinical pathways and administrative processes, ensuring these models improve efficiency, optimise outcomes, and support transparent, evidence-based decisions.

The postholder will lead the development and application of statistical analysis, applying this to locally generated datasets/sources to enhance decision making and support clinical and business objectives, including outcome measurement, trend analysis, and policy development. The post holder will provide expertise and support to drive planning efforts, contributing and guiding the development of frameworks that align operational plans with organisational goals, ensuring effective short- and long-term strategic planning.

Job responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the Business Insights team by setting clear objectives, providing mentorship, and promoting a collaborative and positive culture. Foster professional growth opportunities to ensure the team achieves high performance and contributes effectively to the Groups strategic objectives.
  • Implement advanced data science methods, integrating a variety of data sources to produce actionable insights that enhance evidence-based decision-making. Ensure insights are aligned with both clinical and operational needs, driving improvements and strategic outcomes across various areas within the Group.
  • Lead the optimisation of data models and architecture to ensure scalability, flexibility, and alignment with the Groups strategic goals. Collaborate with Business Intelligence teams to enhance capabilities in real-time analysis, accurate forecasting, and effective resource allocation and management.
  • Lead the development, deployment, and continuous improvement of machine learning models within clinical and administrative settings. Ensure models are monitored, refined, and transparent to optimise efficiency, enhance decision-making, and improve overall patient care and outcomes.
  • Oversee the application of advanced statistical methods to analyse healthcare data, ensuring models provide accurate insights for clinical and business objectives. Support trend analysis, outcome measurement, and evidence-based decision-making, helping shape policies and strategies based on reliable data.
  • Lead the development of analytics frameworks to support planning activities, creating data-driven models that align operational plans with performance and resource requirements. Ensure the frameworks provide effective solutions for both short-term and long-term strategic planning efforts across the Group.
  • Manage the budget and resources for the Business Insights team, identifying cost-saving opportunities and ensuring efficient resource use. Provide financial reports to senior management and support policy development related to Information Management, ensuring alignment with national guidelines.
  • Promote continuous learning and development opportunities within the team, ensuring compliance with mandatory training and adherence to NHS managerial standards. Support personal objective setting and reviews aligned with Groups goals, encouraging a culture of professional growth.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • MSc in Information Management, Data Science, Business Intelligence, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Relevant professional qualifications in Business Intelligence tools (e.g., Microsoft Power BI, SQL certification).
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (e.g., courses in leadership, management, or technical expertise related to Data Science/Statistics).
Desirable
  • Postgraduate degree in Healthcare Data Management, Analytics, or a related discipline.

Experience

Essential
  • Experience as a Senior Manager within an NHS organisation in a performance, informatics or commissioning setting.
  • Experience within an acute hospital setting.
  • Proven record of leading complex, multi-faceted management systems relating to performance and/or planning.
  • Demonstrable evidence of working at immediate sub-Board level.
  • Significant experience of delivering complex strategic and operational planning data.
  • Experience of business planning and preparation of business cases.
  • Ability to give formal presentations.
  • Significant experience of delivering complex strategic and operational planning frameworks
Desirable
  • Experience of partnership working, evidence of playing a major role in an organisational change

Knowledge

Essential
  • Knowledge of national policy and developments within the NHS.
