Are you an expert in data protection with a passion for embedding best practice across complex organisations? A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a talented and ambitious professional to take on the role of Data Protection Officer (DPO) within a well-established and highly regarded legal and governance service.

In this pivotal position, you will be responsible for delivering the legally mandated DPO role, providing strategic leadership and expert advice across a large, multifaceted public sector organisation and its associated schools. You will be the key contact for all data protection matters, guiding the organisation through compliance with the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Act as the organisation's named Data Protection Officer, registered with the Information Commissioner's Office.

  • Provide authoritative, legally binding advice to senior leadership, operational teams, and educational institutions.

  • Lead on the development and implementation of data protection strategies, policies, and training programmes.

  • Respond to data breaches, conduct investigations, and implement preventative measures.

  • Ensure policies such as privacy notices, data processing agreements, and retention schedules are current and legally compliant.

  • Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders including regulators, police, and third-party providers.

  • Foster a data protection culture across all areas of the organisation.

Ideal Candidate:
  • Holds one or more recognised data protection or information security qualifications (e.g. CIPP/E, CIPM, CISM, CISSP-ISSMP).

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a similar role with in-depth knowledge of data protection law, GDPR, and DPA.

  • Demonstrable experience in managing data breaches, DPIAs, SARs, FOI requests, and drafting key governance documentation.

  • Skilled communicator able to build effective relationships with stakeholders at all levels.

  • Experience within local government or educational settings is desirable, though not essential.

  • Confident in providing training, handling pressurised situations, and balancing multiple priorities.
