Payroll Workstream Lead – Permanent – based in Northampton, NN4
Job Purpose:
We are recruiting for a Payroll Workstream Lead to take ownership of the configuration, testing and deployment of a new payroll system as part of a wider business transformation project. This role will play a critical part in ensuring the successful implementation of a new payroll platform, maintaining compliance, ensuring data accuracy and delivering seamless integration with HR and Finance systems. Once the implementation project is complete, the role will transition into a key position within the in-house payroll team.
The successful candidate will work closely with internal stakeholders across HR, Finance and IT to ensure the system is delivered on time, within budget and to the highest operational standards. This role is essential in ensuring colleagues receive accurate and timely payroll information while supporting the long-term efficiency and effectiveness of payroll operations.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Managing project timelines to ensure key milestones and delivery deadlines are achieved
- Leading system design, configuration and testing of the new payroll platform
- Conducting User Acceptance Testing (UAT) and supporting the rollout to end users
- Coordinating data migration and mapping from legacy systems
- Designing and implementing streamlined payroll workflows and processes
- Managing parallel payroll runs to ensure accuracy before system go-live
- Ensuring compliance with all statutory payroll regulations including HMRC requirements
- Developing and implementing robust payroll processes and controls
- Identifying potential project risks and implementing mitigation strategies
- Supporting audit and compliance requirements
- Delivering training to internal stakeholders and producing clear system documentation
Person Specification:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- The ability to identify complex issues and develop practical solutions

Experience:
- Proven experience in payroll operations and payroll system implementation or transformation projects
- Approximately 7+ years’ experience within an in-house payroll team or outsourced payroll provider
- Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation, including statutory payments, pensions and auto-enrolment
- Experience working with HMRC regulations and compliance requirements
- Advanced Excel and Google Docs skills for data analysis, reconciliation and mapping
- Experience with payroll system configuration, upgrades or implementation projects would be highly beneficial
Hours of Work:
- Monday – Friday (37.5 hours)
