Platform Architect

Ortus Telematics is a cutting-edge technology firm specialising in IoT/ Data solutions, predominantly serving the Emergency Services (EMS) sector. As Ortus continues its cloud transformation journey, we’re looking for an experienced and visionary Platform Architect to take ownership of our AWS-based Insight platform.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Own and evolve the end-to-end architecture of the Ortus Insight platform, spanning infrastructure, data, security, and application layers.
• Design and implement scalable, cost-effective AWS architectures that support high-throughput, mission-critical IoT and data workloads.
• Govern platform standards, documentation, and best practices across multiple engineering teams.
• Lead the definition and enforcement of infrastructure as code (IaC) , observability, and automation frameworks.
• Integrate streaming and messaging solutions such as Kafka, SQS, or SNS for data ingestion and event-driven processing.
• Provide architectural assurance across development, DevOps, and data engineering initiatives.
• Mentor and guide the engineering team, driving cloud-native capability and architectural maturity.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Proven experience architecting and operating large-scale systems on AWS , ideally within high-availability.
• Strong knowledge of core AWS services (ECS/EKS, EC2, S3, RDS/Aurora, CloudWatch, IAM, VPC, Lambda, Terraform).
• Demonstrable expertise in Java , with working knowledge of other languages (Python, Go, etc) for supporting services and automation.
• Strong understanding of microservices architecture , event-driven design, and integration patterns.
• Experience designing and managing containerised environments
• Skilled in CI/CD pipeline design using GitHub Actions
• Practical knowledge of infrastructure-as-code (Terraform), observability, and monitoring tools.
• Strong grasp of security architecture , identity management, and network segmentation in cloud environments.
• Solid understanding of data flows, APIs, and asynchronous messaging (Kafka, SQS, SNS).
• Experience managing or leading technical delivery teams using Agile/Scrum frameworks.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex technical concepts into actionable business insight.
• Strong organisational and project management skills with a track record of delivery under pressure.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with Kafka, SQS, SNS , or other messaging systems
• Exposure to IoT and telemetry data environments.
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional or equivalent.
