Data Engineer
Job Title: Senior Data Engineer
Salary: £75,000 - £85,000
Location: London (Hybrid - 2 days on-site)
Overview
We are seeking a Data Engineer to join a data and analytics function within the energy and environmental services sector. This is a highly impactful, end-to-end role focused on designing, building, and embedding modern data platforms that support operational insight, business intelligence, and strategic decision-making.
Operating in a low data-maturity environment, this role will play a key part in shaping the organisation's data foundations, architecture, and governance. The successful candidate will take ownership of data platforms and pipelines, working closely with technical teams and business stakeholders to move the organisation to its next stage of data maturity.
This is a hands-on senior role with full lifecycle responsibility, well suited to someone who enjoys building scalable data solutions from the ground up within a mission-driven, infrastructure-led environment.
Key Responsibilities
Data Engineering & Architecture
- Design, develop, and maintain robust, scalable, and secure data platforms and analytics architecture across cloud environments, primarily using Microsoft Azure and Microsoft Fabric.
- Build and optimise end-to-end data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes to support reporting, analytics, and operational use cases.
- Own data reliability, performance, quality, and availability across core data assets.
Data Platforms, Governance & Maturity
- Develop and maintain enterprise data models, including master data management (MDM) and core dimensional models.
- Establish and embed data governance frameworks covering data quality, security, access, and regulatory compliance.
- Support the introduction of data standards, cataloguing, and best practices to enable reusable and interoperable data assets.
Stakeholder Engagement & Delivery
- Partner closely with data leadership, system implementation teams, analytics developers, and business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into scalable technical solutions.
- Act as a bridge between technical delivery and business users, ensuring data solutions meet real operational and strategic needs.
- Provide technical leadership and guidance on modern data engineering and analytics best practices, including the use of automation and AI where appropriate.
Continuous Improvement
- Monitor platform usage and performance, identifying opportunities for optimisation and enhancement.
- Contribute to the data and analytics roadmap, including tooling, capability development, training, and long-term platform evolution.
Qualifications & Experience
- 5+ years' commercial experience in Data Engineering, Data Architecture, or closely related roles.
- Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure data services and Microsoft Fabric (end-to-end platform delivery experience is essential).
- Advanced SQL skills and strong proficiency in Python for data engineering and automation.
- Solid experience designing data models and building scalable, production-grade data pipelines.
- Strong understanding of data governance, security, compliance, and best practices for managing enterprise data assets.
- Experience working with MDM, data cataloguing, or metadata management tools.
- Comfortable operating in a low data maturity environment and leading change through influence rather than authority.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Exposure to AI-enabled data solutions or data architecture certifications (e.g. DAMA, TOGAF) is advantageous but not essential.
Benefits
- Hybrid working model
- Private medical insurance and life assurance
- Company pension scheme
- Generous annual leave package
- Employee assistance programme (EAP)
- Employee recognition and wellbeing initiatives
- Opportunity to work on large-scale, real-world data challenges within the energy and sustainability sector
