VAT/Tax Accountant

The Role
We're looking for a detail-oriented VAT / Tax Accountant to oversee and manage indirect tax compliance across multiple regions, including the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Nordics, the USA, and other jurisdictions. You’ll play a key role in ensuring all VAT reporting and filing obligations are met accurately and on time, while also offering insights into the tax implications of our business operations. You'll work alongside external advisors when necessary and contribute to the continuous improvement of our tax processes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare and file VAT returns and related tax submissions across various countries within required deadlines.
- Validate sales invoices to ensure correct VAT treatment is applied.
- Advise and support on import/export regulations within the UK, EU, and globally.
- Compile and submit EC Sales Lists and Intrastat declarations.
- Ensure full compliance with the latest VAT regulations and best practices.
- Reconcile VAT accounts, verifying the accuracy of input and output tax.
- Perform internal VAT reviews and support external tax audits as required.
- Act as the internal point of contact for VAT-related queries, offering clear guidance across departments.
- Identify opportunities to streamline and improve VAT-related processes and systems.
- Keep current with changes in VAT legislation across all relevant jurisdictions.
- Conduct research and provide analysis to support tax planning strategies and maximize tax efficiency.
- Liaise with external advisors and tax authorities when needed.
- Assist with compiling documentation and data during tax reviews or audits.
- Track and manage tax filing deadlines to ensure full compliance.
About You
You will work cross-functionally with internal teams to ensure full tax compliance while helping to enhance the efficiency of VAT-related processes. A broad understanding of other tax areas, particularly in an international context, would be a strong advantage.
Key Skills & Experience:
- Previous experience in a VAT-focused accounting role or a similar tax position.
- In-depth knowledge of VAT legislation and compliance procedures.
- Demonstrated expertise in preparing and submitting VAT returns across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong analytical mindset with high attention to accuracy and detail.
- Proficient in accounting systems and Excel for data analysis and reporting.
- Hands-on experience with ERP platforms, ideally SAP or similar systems.
- Confident communicator, capable of translating complex VAT topics into clear guidance.
- Self-motivated with a solutions-oriented approach to process improvement.
- Ideally holds a professional accounting qualification (such as ACA, ACCA, or equivalent).
- Familiarity with VAT and other tax rules relevant to the construction sector is a plus.
