Shift Technician
About the Role
We are recruiting an experienced Shift Engineer to join our 24/7 Critical Facilities team at our mission-critical data centre. Operating on a continental shift pattern, you will play a key role in delivering 100% uptime for our customers by monitoring, operating, and maintaining the site’s mechanical, electrical, and life-safety infrastructure.
This is a hands-on operational role with a clearly defined development pathway. The successful candidate will be supported to become Site Low Voltage Authorised Person (LVAP ), with onward progression to High Voltage Authorised Person (HVAP ) in line with our internal authorisation framework and the site’s HV/LV Safety Rules.
Key Responsibilities -
Operations & Monitoring
- Provide 24/7 monitoring of critical M&E plant via BMS
- Respond to alarms, faults, and incidents in a structured and timely manner, following site Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs) and Escalation Procedure
- Maintain accurate shift logs, incident reports, and handover documentation; ensure seamless continuity between shifts
- Conduct routine site walkdowns, plant readings, and condition-based inspections across electrical, mechanical, and life-safety systems
- Ensure data hall environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, airflow, differential pressure) remain within agreed operational parameters
Maintenance
- Carry out Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) on-shift and assist specialist vendors as required
- Perform first-line reactive maintenance and fault diagnosis on UPS, generators, LV switchgear, PDUs/RPPs, CRAC/CRAH units, chillers, pumps, BMS, and fire detection & suppression systems
- Support major maintenance windows and customer-impacting works, executing and drafting Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and EOPs
- Identify and report defects, near-misses, and continuous-improvement opportunities
Safety, Permits & Compliance
- Operate the site Permit to Work (PTW) system — issuing, receiving, and supervising permits as authorised
- Apply Lock-Out / Tag-Out (LOTO) isolation procedures rigorously
- Escort and supervise contractors, ensuring full adherence to site safety, security, and operational standards
- Manage fire system isolations and re-instatements
- Champion a “Safety First, Uptime Always” culture across the shift team
Authorised Person Duties (post-appointment)
- Once appointed as Site LVAP, take responsibility for LV switching, isolations, and the issue of LV permits in accordance with the site Safety Rules
- Develop towards HVAP appointment, supporting HV switching schedules, HV isolations, and the broader site authorisation programme
Essential Experience & Qualifications
- Recognised apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Building Services (City & Guilds, NVQ Level 3, HNC, or above)
- Minimum 3 years’ experience in a critical environment: data centre, pharmaceutical, hospital, broadcast, financial trading floor, or similar 24/7 mission-critical setting
- Strong working knowledge of M&E systems: UPS, standby generators, LV switchgear, PDUs/RPPs, CRAC/CRAH, chilled water systems, BMS, and fire/life-safety systems
- Demonstrable experience working within a Permit to Work environment and a clear understanding of LOTO/safe isolation principles
- Willingness and ability to work a continental shift pattern, including nights, weekends, and public holidays
- Flexibility to work occasional overtime
