Platform Support Engineer
Platform Support Engineer
Central London (Hybrid – One day in the office every two weeks)
£50,000 per annum
Are you at your best working in a Linux terminal, methodically unpicking issues and getting to the root cause of problems? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity.
Our client is looking to appoint a Platform Support Engineer to join their collaborative and growing technology team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone from a Systems Administration, Infrastructure Support or technical operations background who enjoys investigating issues, working hands-on with Linux environments, and becoming the go-to person when things need fixing.
This is not a software engineering role. Instead, it is ideal for someone who thrives in the command line, enjoys solving problems, and takes pride in providing clear communication and support to wider engineering teams.
The Opportunity
Reporting directly to the Head of Technology, you will play a key role in maintaining the health and reliability of the company's platforms. You'll be the first point of contact for infrastructure-related issues, investigating alerts, analysing logs, identifying root causes and ensuring problems are either resolved or escalated with the right level of detail.
You'll work within a supportive environment where your Linux expertise will be used every day, whilst benefiting from genuine opportunities to develop your career.
What You'll Be Doing
- Monitoring support channels and triaging infrastructure issues as they arise
- Investigating incidents directly within Linux environments using SSH and the command line
- Diagnosing problems using tools such as top, htop, ps, free, df, netstat, iostat and lsof
- Analysing logs using grep, awk, sed, tail and journalctl to determine root causes
- Distinguishing genuine incidents from false alarms and prioritising accordingly
- Providing clear summaries of findings and communicating updates to technical teams
- Escalating complex issues with concise documentation and context
- Contributing to internal runbooks and knowledge-sharing documentation
- Identifying trends and helping improve alerting and monitoring processes
- Writing basic Bash scripts to automate repetitive operational tasks
- Working with technologies including Docker, Jenkins and GitHub Actions
What They're Looking For
Essential:
- Strong experience working within Linux as your primary environment
- Confidence investigating issues through the command line without relying on a GUI
- Experience using Unix tools including grep, awk, sed, top, ps, free, df, netstat, tail and journalctl
- Familiarity with Docker or containerised environments
- The ability to read and interpret log files effectively
- Basic Bash scripting skills
- Strong written communication skills with the ability to explain technical issues clearly
- A methodical and analytical approach to problem-solving
- The confidence to manage your workload and escalate when appropriate
Desirable:
- Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, New Relic or Datadog
- Exposure to AWS, Azure or GCP environments
- Knowledge of YAML configuration files
- Basic Python or JavaScript scripting skills
- Understanding of Linux security and networking concepts
- Experience using AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot to improve productivity
About You
You'll enjoy understanding why something has broken rather than simply applying a quick fix. You're calm under pressure, naturally curious and able to work through problems logically. You communicate clearly, document thoroughly and take ownership of your work.
What's on Offer
- Salary of £50,000 per annum
- Hybrid working with just one day in the office every two weeks in Central London
- Direct exposure to the Head of Technology and wider engineering teams
- A clear progression pathway to become a Mid-Level Platform Support Engineer within 18 months
- Dedicated development time and a learning budget to support your growth
- The opportunity to join a collaborative team where your contribution genuinely makes an impact
If you're looking for a role where your Linux skills will be valued, your development supported, and no two days are ever quite the same, we'd love to hear from you.
