Applications Engineer (BI)
Application Engineer – Business Intelligence
£75,000 – £88,000 | London – 3 days per week in office |Permanent
About the role
We're looking for a hands-on Application Engineer to take ownership of a portfolio of business applications within a small, close-knit Business Systems team of 15. This isn't a seat at the end of a reporting queue - you'll own the full pipeline, from SQL engineering and data warehouse design through to Power BI development and Azure Data Factory integrations, working as a technical product owner for the applications in your care.
The role sits within a stable, prestigious, international professional services environment that's actively evolving its technology stack — modern tools, real ownership, and a team culture built around cross-skilling and knowledge sharing rather than siloed specialisms.
What you'll be doing
- Writing and maintaining stored procedures, functions and complex SQL within a data warehousing context (Kimball or Inmon), not just ad hoc querying
- Building DAX-driven Power BI semantic models and producing paginated/SSRS-style reports — not solely dashboard design
- Delivering Azure Data Factory integrations (REST and/or OData) in a live production environment
- Working closely with vendors and stakeholders as the technical owner of your application portfolio
What we're looking for
- Hands-on SQL database engineering experience within a data warehousing context — not limited to reporting-only SQL use
- Practical Power BI development experience: DAX-driven semantic models and paginated/SSRS-style reporting
- Delivered Azure Data Factory integrations (REST and/or OData) in a production environment, not proof-of-concept only
- Experience within a legal or wider regulated professional services environment
Nice to have
- Tabular Editor, DAX Studio or ALM Toolkit
- DevOps, CI/CD and deployment pipeline experience
- Familiarity with legal sector compliance and IT security standards (e.g. GDPR, ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials Plus)
- Exposure to agile or iterative delivery methodologies
The process
A structured two-stage interview process: an initial conversation with two Application Leads, followed by a second stage with the Business Systems Manager and Head of Business Systems.
Company name withheld at this stage - full details shared with shortlisted candidates.
