Refrigeration Engineer
Refrigeration Design Engineer
Chelmsford – Office Based
£60,000–£65,000
We are currently partnering with a highly specialised engineering and technology organisation who are looking for a Refrigeration Design Engineer to join their expanding R&D team in Chelmsford.
The business operates within an advanced, innovation-led environment focused on the development of ultra-low temperature refrigeration and cooling technologies. Working at the intersection of thermodynamics, product engineering, and advanced modelling, they are developing highly technical systems used within demanding and regulated applications.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a strong background in refrigeration system design, heat transfer, and thermodynamic modelling who enjoys working across the full product development lifecycle. The position will suit an engineer who is equally comfortable developing new concepts, analysing system behaviour, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to bring innovative technologies into production.
In role, you will support the design and development of advanced refrigeration systems, focusing on system performance, modelling, testing, and optimisation. You will work closely with R&D, engineering, manufacturing, suppliers, and testing teams to ensure products are robust, efficient, and aligned with technical and commercial requirements.
The role is based in the Chelmsford area and is an office-based role.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop ultra-low temperature refrigeration systems to meet customer and product requirements.
- Develop and validate thermodynamic and heat transfer models to optimise system performance while reducing prototype and testing requirements.
- Create and review specifications for refrigeration systems and components for prototype and production applications.
- Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing teams to ensure component feasibility, quality, and production readiness.
- Support refrigeration testing activities, including planning, execution, analysis, and continuous product improvement.
- Analyse testing results to identify performance improvements and implement engineering changes.
- Contribute to refrigeration technology roadmaps through research into innovative and cost-effective cooling technologies.
- Support regulatory and quality compliance activities including ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 documentation requirements.
- Support manufacturing processes and methods to ensure products meet required quality and safety standards.
Experience Required
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a similar engineering discipline.
- Strong technical background in thermodynamics, heat transfer, and refrigeration system design.
- Proven experience developing refrigeration products or technologies within an R&D or engineering environment.
- Experience with mathematical modelling and simulation of refrigeration or heat transfer systems.
- Understanding of formal product development processes including DFM, FMEA, and design controls.
- Experience using engineering tools such as Refprop, Flownex, or SolidWorks would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of FGas regulations or hydrocarbon refrigerant systems would be beneficial.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving capability with a hands-on engineering approach.
Salary: £60,000–£65,000
Benefits: 25 days holiday, Pension, Healthcare
Interview Process: 3 stages – first two on Teams. Final stage in the office
