The role: Technical Support Engineer – Linux Web Hosting Environment
- Location: Near Preston, Lancashire
- Salary: £28,000 to £31,000 basic + benefits
- Shift Options: Either - Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm – fully onsite (non-negotiable) OR Monday to Friday, 4pm to midnight – remote after initial training period onsite.
Please note: You must already live within commuting distance of Preston, Lancashire. There is no relocation or sponsorship available. My client cannot consider candidates needing to move for this role.
The Opportunity:
I'm recruiting an experienced Technical Support Engineer with solid Linux command line skills and hands-on experience in web hosting environments. You’ll need to have relevant exposure to cPanel and a good understanding of web hosting infrastructure. The company is a well-established hosting and cloud services provider, offering a stable, long-term role with full training and support from a friendly technical team.
This is not an entry-level position. You’ll need to be confident supporting customers and solving technical issues across shared hosting, DNS, SSL, email services and related systems.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Providing first and second line support to hosting customers via ticket and phone
- Troubleshooting common issues across DNS, email, SSL, domains, backups and websites
- Handling cPanel-based support queries and account migrations
- Analysing server logs and monitoring alerts
- Advising customers on basic self-management where relevant
- Updating documentation and knowledge base content
- Supporting abuse ticket handling and basic application-level issues
What You’ll Need to Have:
- Strong experience working in a Linux environment using command line tools; alongside a good understanding of how shared hosting platforms work
- Familiarity with DNS, SSL, IPs, email protocols, and basic firewall rules
- cPanel experience at root/admin level
- Ability to manage packages and build/install Linux software
- Confident communication skills, both written and spoken
- Able to work independently and as part of a small, remote-first team
Good to Have:
- Bash, PHP or Perl scripting experience
- Understanding of TCP/IP and basic networking
- Familiarity with virtualisation technologies
