Site Manager (HV Substation)
We're working with a client who are looking for a Site Manager for their HV substation project in the Hampshire area. You would be leading the safe, compliant and on-programme delivery of A2MTA works whilst managing the site team, subcontractors and client through to energisation and handover.
This is a contract role starting ASAP and lasting until December 2026. Typical working days would be Monday to Friday, with programmed outage/out-of-hours working.
You must have an SSE (SSEN) authorisation at the Senior Appointed Person/Site Management level.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take overall site responsibility for safe, compliant, on-programme delivery of the outstanding works to the programme completion date of 8 December 2026.
- Act as the primary interface with SSEN operational, authorising and commissioning staff; plan, request and manage HV and LV outages and site access windows.
- Hold and exercise SSE (SSEN) authorisation at Senior Authorised Person / site-management level; control the safe system of work and issue/receive safety documentation.
- Lead and coordinate the site team (site supervisor, fitters/electricians, cable jointer) and specialist subcontractors, allocating resource against the programme.
- Own site health, safety, environmental and CDM compliance; prepare and brief RAMS, run daily briefings, and maintain a zero-harm culture on a live/part-live substation.
- Coordinate the testing, commissioning and energisation sequence with the commissioning engineer and SSEN control.
- Manage quality, inspection and test plan sign-off, snagging and defect close-out.
- Compile and submit commissioning documentation and as-built records; manage de-mobilisation and handover.
- Manage free-issue materials and equipment, plant, logistics and traffic management (A339).
- Report progress, risk and cost against programme to the Contracts/Project Manager.
Essential qualifications and experience:
- Current SSE / SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks) authorisation to Senior Authorised Person / site-management level under the applicable Distribution Safety Rules.
- SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme).
- Recognised electrical/engineering qualification (HNC/HND or C&G in electrical engineering) or equivalent time-served background.
- SHEA Power / EUSR utility safety passport and CSCS/ECS card; first aid at work.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Demonstrable, hands-on experience managing works on high voltage substations at 33kV and 132kV.
- Proven delivery of grid transformer replacement and associated HV/LV installation and commissioning in a DNO/transmission environment (ideally SSEN/SSE).
- Experience planning and managing HV outages and the associated safety documentation.
- Experience leading multi-disciplinary site teams and subcontractors to programme.
