Senior Modelling Analyst
Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Modelling Analyst to join the Data & Analytics team, NHS Wales Performance and Improvement. We are looking for a proactive and ambitious candidate with skills in operational research, modelling, data science and/or management science. This is an interesting and diverse role, offering prospects for personal development and career progression.
The work will be wide ranging and varied as the team is tasked with delivering modelling projects and providing advice to the range of Directorates within NHS Wales Performance and Improvement. The successful candidate will work in the Operational Research and Modelling team to support the delivery of modelling projects, provide advice and expertise on problem structuring, the model development process, and analysis and presentation of findings, in line with the delivery of Welsh Government and NHS Wales priorities.
Main duties of the job
The Data & Analytics team encompasses data, analysis, information and knowledge, ensuring decision makers have the right intelligence at the right time to improve the quality, efficacy and efficiency of services to improve patient experience, safety and outcomes.

Your day-to-day role will require you to have a vast array of skills in areas including analytics, mathematical modelling, data visualisation, negotiation and communication to deliver high-profile projects that meet the team's objectives. Where applicable, you will be given a range of responsibilities which may include developing expertise on a specific dataset, analytical method, programming language or modelling tool. You will also work alongside colleagues in the Data and Analytics team, and other senior colleagues ensuring the team embraces innovative techniques to be at the forefront of operational research and modelling in Wales.

We are looking for individuals educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent professional experience with evidence of continued professional development.
You will have experience of:
- Working with complex conceptual, analytical and mathematical models to derive meaningful insight, providing specialist advice on highly complex operational research and modelling issues
- Using a range of tools and techniques to deliver modelling projects covering data extraction and manipulation, mathematical modelling, scenario and experiment analysis and data presentation to provide meaningful insight to a range of audiences
- Providing and presenting highly complex information to clinicians and senior managers
- Understanding and resolving data and model quality issues
- Advanced IT and analytical skills with an in-depth knowledge of IT tools/systems such as simul8 (or other Discrete Event Simulation tools), VenSim (or other System Dynamics software), SQL, statistical software and programming languages (such as R and Python).
- Excellent verbal, written & presentation skills
Person Specification
Qualifications and Knowledge
- Educated to degree level in a mathematical, statistical, computer-science, management science or similar discipline OR equivalent qualification OR equivalent level of knowledge and skills
- Specialist knowledge and experience of Operational Research modelling techniques
- Knowledge and interest areas complementary to Operational Research modelling - e.g. Data Science techniques (Machine Learning and cluster analysis) or Social Research techniques (survey design and evaluation Knowledge of health economics)
- Masters degree in a numerate subject OR equivalent qualification OR equivalent level of knowledge and skills
Experience
- Experience of performing complex analytical tasks and creating outputs for use by others
- Experience of communicating complex information to a non-technical audience
- Understanding of Operational Research and Modelling techniques
- High level of understanding of Modelling in NHS Wales and the role of the NHS Wales Modelling Collaborative
- Report writing and presentation skills.
- Experience utilising complex datasets related to population health
- Familiarity with medical terminology and coding systems e.g. ICD10, OPCS, Read codes, SNOMED CT
Skills
- Advanced IT skills with experience of using Microsoft Office applications, and particularly advanced MS Excel knowledge
- Knowledge and experience of specialist computer software, such as SQL, R studio or Simul8 for the production of complex health system models.
- Understanding of organisations policies and principles and the ability to work within these guidelines.
- Clear understanding of current and ongoing issues affecting health services.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to demonstrate understanding and application of our workplace values, together with the underpinning behaviours identified for success in this role
- Welsh Language Skills are desirable levels 1 to 5 in understanding, speaking, reading, and writing in Welsh
