Senior WordPress Engineer

Salary: £90,000
We're supporting a leading digital company in their search for an experienced Senior WordPress Engineer. This is a fantastic opportunity to work on high-traffic, enterprise-level WordPress properties that reach millions of users every month.
As a Senior WordPress Engineer, you'll play a key role in driving digital innovation and enhancing the performance of some of the UK's most prominent online brands. You'll work remotely with the flexibility to attend occasional team meet-ups in London.
What You'll Be Doing
- Developing and maintaining new features for large-scale WordPress properties.
- Creating and maintaining shared plugins used across multiple high-traffic sites.
- Developing independent microservices and JavaScript applications that integrate with WordPress brands.
- Supporting partner and vendor integrations to enhance the digital product portfolio.
- Monitoring and improving response times, database performance, and Core Web Vital scores.
- Leading discussions on technology choices and best practices for scalability, maintainability, and project delivery.
- Debugging and troubleshooting issues raised by editorial and support teams.
- Managing your own workload in a fast-paced, agile environment with little direction.
What We're Looking For
- 8+ years of experience in WordPress development (preferably enterprise-scale).
- In-depth knowledge of Gutenberg, WP-JSON API, and plugin architecture.
- Expertise in front-end development (React, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PHP).
- Experience creating custom Gutenberg blocks and API integrations.
- Proficiency with Git, Agile workflows, and CI/CD principles.
- Strong debugging skills with tools like Chrome DevTools, WP-CLI.
- Familiarity with Core Web Vitals, caching strategies, and query optimisation.
- Excellent communication skills, especially in a remote, distributed team.
Nice to Have
- Experience with WordPress VIP or PugPig platforms.
- Familiarity with AWS services (S3, Lambda, EC2, API Gateway).
- Experience with Symfony, Twig, or Typescript/Webpack.
- Knowledge of monitoring tools like New Relic or Kibana.
- Experience with subscription platforms like Piano.io or Zephr.
- Automated testing experience (PHPUnit, Behat, Playwright).
