Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer

My client, a well established MSP, is looking for an experienced Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer to join their team.

The Role

As a Senior IT Infrastructure Engineer, you will act as a senior technical escalation point within the business. You will diagnose and resolve complex incidents, lead root cause analysis, support and mentor junior engineers, and help design and deliver secure, resilient technology solutions for our clients.

The role combines advanced technical support with project delivery and infrastructure consultancy. You will need to move confidently between different client environments, priorities and technologies while maintaining clear documentation and excellent communication.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as a senior escalation point for complex infrastructure, cloud, networking and security incidents.
  • Take ownership of high-priority technical issues through to resolution.
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement measures to prevent recurring incidents.
  • Design, plan and deliver infrastructure, cloud, migration and networking projects.
  • Architect and deploy advanced Microsoft cloud, server and network solutions across multiple client sites.
  • Build, migrate, configure and maintain Windows Server environments.
  • Manage Microsoft 365, Entra ID and Microsoft Intune environments.
  • Configure and troubleshoot firewalls, VPNs, switching, routing and network security.
  • Design, manage and troubleshoot backup and disaster-recovery solutions.
  • Use PowerShell to automate administrative tasks, deployments and system-management processes.
  • Produce and maintain accurate technical documentation, project records and client configurations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior and intermediate engineers.
  • Contribute to technical standards, security improvements and operational best practice.
  • Communicate clearly with clients, colleagues, suppliers and other stakeholders.

Core Technical Competencies

Cloud and Infrastructure

  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft 365, including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online and Microsoft Teams.
  • Advanced administration of Microsoft Entra ID, formerly Azure Active Directory.
  • Strong experience implementing and managing Microsoft Intune for device management, compliance and security.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365 migrations, tenant configuration and identity management.
  • Sound understanding of cloud security, conditional access, multifactor authentication and identity protection.

Server and Virtualisation

  • Extensive hands-on experience building, migrating, managing and troubleshooting Windows Server infrastructure, including Windows Server 2016 through to Windows Server 2025.
  • Strong knowledge of Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, file services and certificate services.
  • Practical experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V.
  • Experience planning and completing physical-to-virtual, virtual-to-virtual and cloud migration projects.
  • Ability to diagnose complex performance, authentication, replication and availability issues.

Networking and Security

  • Advanced understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, routing, switching and wireless networking.
  • Strong experience configuring and managing enterprise firewalls, including platforms such as Fortinet, SonicWall or Sophos.
  • Experience designing, deploying and troubleshooting site-to-site and remote-access VPNs.
  • Good understanding of network segmentation, access controls, security hardening and threat prevention.
  • Ability to diagnose complex connectivity and performance issues across multi-site environments.

Automation

  • Strong PowerShell scripting skills.
  • Experience using PowerShell for system administration, mass deployment, reporting and process automation.
  • Ability to develop reliable, documented and reusable scripts.

Backup and Disaster Recovery

  • Experience designing, implementing and troubleshooting business-critical backup and disaster-recovery solutions.
  • Strong working knowledge of platforms such as Veeam and Datto.
  • Understanding of recovery objectives, retention policies, off-site replication and disaster-recovery testing.
  • Ability to investigate failed backups and confidently manage restoration and recovery processes.

About You

You will have:

  • Substantial experience in a senior infrastructure, third-line support or technical project role.
  • Previous experience working for a managed service provider (MSP)
  • The ability to manage multiple client environments and competing priorities.
  • A structured and methodical approach to troubleshooting.
  • The ability to understand both the immediate technical issue and its underlying cause.
  • Experience delivering technically complex projects from planning through to completion.
  • The confidence to make sound technical recommendations and explain them clearly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • A collaborative approach and the willingness to mentor less-experienced colleagues.
  • High standards of professionalism, documentation and client service.
  • A full UK driving licence and the ability to travel to client sites when required.

Desirable Experience

Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:

  • Microsoft Azure infrastructure and Azure Virtual Desktop.
  • Microsoft Defender and the wider Microsoft security platform.
  • Autotask, Datto RMM or similar MSP platforms.
  • Cyber Essentials or other recognised security frameworks.
  • Dell or comparable enterprise server and storage technologies.
  • Microsoft, VMware, Fortinet, Sophos, SonicWall or Veeam certifications.
