Principal AI Research Engineer

AI Engineer – Build the Future of UK AI Research Are you interested in applying your AI expertise to projects that tackle some of the world’s biggest challenges We’re looking for an experienced and enthusiastic AI Engineer to join a specialist team delivering a new, UK-wide AI supercomputing initiative. This unique platform is being deployed to support globally impactful research in areas such as clean energy, personalised medicine, and climate science – and we need your help to create the tools, workflows, and community that will maximise its potential.This role combines deep technical work with the chance to help shape a growing national ecosystem of AI and HPC practitioners.What you’ll be doing
  • Lead AI projects across a wide range of domains, tailoring approaches to the needs of users and stakeholders.
  • Build community by supporting workshops, user groups, and events that connect researchers across disciplines.
  • Mentor and train both new and experienced users, creating clear development pathways for AI and HPC skills.
  • Drive innovation in areas like healthcare, energy, and climate by enabling researchers to fully exploit advanced AI infrastructure.
What we’re looking for
  • Experience leading or mentoring technical specialists.
  • Hands-on background in AI methods such as NLP, machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modelling (large language model experience a bonus).
  • Proficiency in software engineering, with a strong grasp of algorithms and data structures.
  • Excellent communication skills, comfortable engaging both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Track record of community building, user engagement, or developer relations.
  • Interest in high performance computing (HPC) – direct experience is welcome but not essential.
