Data Technician Apprentice

We’re looking for a Data Apprentice — Interested?

Are you looking for a role where you can learn, grow and help make a difference from day one? Do you want to join an organisation that supports you to thrive, celebrates your achievements, and gives you the opportunity to be the best version of yourself? Ready for an exciting start to your career?

A bit about Gateshead Council:

Gateshead is a constantly evolving borough, combining new development, historic character and ambitious plans for the future. The demand for our services continues to grow, and we work closely with partners to deliver the best outcomes for our communities. We’re committed to providing high-quality services and need people who want to make a difference, who are eager to learn and who are ready to contribute to meaningful, real-world projects.

Our people:

People are our greatest asset. We value every employee, including our apprentices, and we encourage everyone to think differently, do the right thing and be innovative. You’ll be supported throughout your apprenticeship, with opportunities to gain experience, grow your skills and contribute to work that truly matters.

The team:

You’ll join the Transport Strategy Team, a forward-thinking and ambitious group working to shape the future of travel across Gateshead. Our aim is to build a transport network that is cleaner, safer, more connected and more accessible for everyone. We use evidence and insight to guide decisions, influence investment, and deliver real improvements for our communities.

This is an exciting time to join us. We’re evolving how we use data and digital tools across everything we do — from monitoring active travel activity, reviewing highways schemes to planning future transport networks. As our Data Apprentice, you will play a key role in helping us embed data-driven thinking into the heart of the team.

About the role:

As a Data Apprentice, you’ll learn on the job while helping the team develop strong data foundations and smarter ways of working. You will support the team by:

  • Helping design and build data architecture and systems that make our information easy to use, accessible and reliable
  • Collecting, organising, and maintaining transport-related datasets
  • Supporting the development of dashboards, maps and visual tools using GIS, spreadsheets and other software
  • Assisting with data cleaning, quality checks and recording processes
  • Preparing visualisations and summaries that help the team understand trends, challenges and opportunities
  • Contributing to evidence bases for strategies, business cases and transport improvement projects

We’re looking for someone who is curious, motivated and willing to learn, with:

  • An interest in data, digital tools or problem-solving
  • IT skills (e.g. spreadsheets, files and folders, software use)
  • Good organisation and a positive approach to learning
  • The ability to work as part of a team, ask questions, and try out new ideas

You don’t need to be an expert — just enthusiastic, committed and ready to develop.

Entry requirements:

  • 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subject
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above)
  • Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in a similar subject

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme.

If you hold international equivalents of the above qualifications, at the time of your application you must be able to provide an official document that states how your international qualifications compare to the UK qualifications.
