IT Support Technician Apprentice

About the role:

We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic IT Support Technician Apprentice to join our IT team. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience while working towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Information Communications Technician qualification.

You will support day-to-day IT operations, assist colleagues with technical issues, and help maintain secure and efficient systems across the organisation. This role is ideal for someone looking to build a career in IT infrastructure, networking, or systems support.

Responsibilities:

  • First-line technical support: Respond to helpdesk tickets and service requests. Diagnose and resolve basic hardware, software, and connectivity issues. Support Microsoft 365 applications (Outlook, Teams, SharePoint). Perform password resets and account unlocks.
  • Networking & infrastructure support: Assist with configuring workstations and network devices. Support basic LAN/WAN troubleshooting. Assist in monitoring network performance. Support Wi-Fi configuration and connectivity issues.
  • Cybersecurity & compliance: Support implementation of security policies and procedures. Assist with user access controls and permissions. Help maintain antivirus, endpoint protection and patch updates. Understand GDPR and data protection best practices.
  • Hardware & software deployment: Set up laptops, desktops, and mobile devices. Install operating systems and approved applications. Maintain asset registers and inventory systems. Support onboarding and offboarding processes.
  • Documentation & continuous improvement: Log and manage support tickets accurately. Update internal knowledge base documentation. Follow ITIL-based service management practices. Participate in team meetings and training sessions.

This role supports development of the following apprenticeship competencies:

  • Knowledge: IT fundamentals (hardware, software, operating systems). Networking principles (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, LAN/WAN). Cybersecurity fundamentals. ITIL service management principles. Cloud technologies (Microsoft 365 / Azure basics).
  • Skills: Troubleshooting and problem resolution. Communication with technical and non-technical users. Supporting remote and on-site users. Maintaining system security and compliance. Documenting processes and incidents accurately
  • Behaviours: Professional and customer-focused approach. Strong attention to detail. Willingness to learn and develop. Team collaboration. Accountability and time management.

You will need the following skills:

  • Strong interest in IT and technology.
  • Good communication skills (written and verbal).
  • Basic understanding of computer systems.

Additionally, the following experience would be beneficial:

  • Familiarity with Microsoft 365.
  • Basic networking knowledge.
  • Prior work experience (even informal) in IT support.

Entry requirements:

  • 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subject
  • GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above)
  • Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship is in a similar subject

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme.
