IT Technician Apprentice
About the role:
Magdalen College School is a prestigious independent day school located in Oxford, England.
We are seeking an IT Technician Apprentice to join our dynamic IT team and support the smooth running of IT operations for both staff and pupils. The ideal candidate will play a key role in maintaining and supporting the end-user computing environment, including school computers, portable devices, printers, and audio-visual provision. This role offers a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience while contributing to the IT infrastructure of a busy school environment.
You will provide first-line technical support and troubleshooting for staff and students, ensuring a seamless IT experience. You will work closely with the IT department and assist with AV support when required, especially during school events. Your responsibilities will include maintaining IT hardware, installing software, managing user computing devices, and ensuring that all systems run smoothly.
The successful candidate will demonstrate enthusiasm for IT and a desire to develop their career in this field. You will be a proactive team player with a keen eye for detail and a strong desire to deliver excellent service.
Responsibilities:
- End-user support: Provide frontline technical support and troubleshooting for staff and students, primarily via the IT helpdesk system.
- Software deployment & maintenance: Deploy and maintain software on school PCs, ensuring systems are up-to-date and optimized.
- Hardware management: Ensure the availability and proper functioning of key hardware devices such as PCs, monitors, printers, and audio-visual equipment.
- AV support: Assist the AV Technician as needed with maintaining and supporting audio-visual equipment for school events and activities.
- General IT support: Monitor and process IT helpdesk requests, respond to user queries, and provide 1-1 instructions on standard school software packages.
- Project support: Assist with or take responsibility for IT projects as directed by the Director of IT or other senior team members.
- Other duties: Undertake any other duties as necessary to ensure the IT department operates effectively.
Essential skills:
- Experience working with Microsoft products in a school or enterprise-level environment.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work well in a small, active team.
- Basic understanding of scripting techniques for computer monitoring and configuration.
- Willingness to work outside regular hours when required (some evening and weekend work may be necessary).
- Strong desire to develop your career within IT.
Additionally, the following experience would be beneficial:
- Experience in an educational environment.
- Familiarity with the IT requirements of an independent school.
- Web development or programming skills.
- Knowledge of supporting Apple devices.
- Experience administering Microsoft 365.
- A Microsoft IT professional certification (e.g., MCSE, MCSA) or equivalent knowledge of systems like Active Directory, Exchange, or TCP/IP networking.
Entry requirements:
- 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subject
- GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above)
- Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship is in a similar subject
You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance you could still be considered for the programme.
If you hold international equivalents of the above qualifications, at the time of your application you must be able to provide an official document that states how your international qualifications compare to the UK qualifications.

Working hours:
8:15am – 5pm, Monday to Friday with an hour for lunch, free lunch provided on site.
