Role Description

As the Unreal Engine Programmer on Morag’s Birthday Party, you will play a key role in bringing the game’s core systems and moment-to-moment gameplay to life.

You’ll work closely with the Game Director to translate design ideas into interactive experiences, shaping how players explore, interact, and navigate the world. The project is a stylised 3D narrative horror game, blending environmental storytelling, puzzle-solving, and cinematic atmosphere.

This role focuses on building the foundational gameplay systems that define the player experience — from movement and camera to interaction and progression.

You’ll be encouraged to take ownership of systems, suggest improvements, and help define technical workflows as the project grows.

  • Character movement (3D exploration)
  • Cinematic / fixed camera system (Little Nightmares–inspired)
  • Interaction system (objects, environment, triggers)
  • Inventory system (basic)
  • Puzzle logic and progression systems
  • Door / unlocking systems
  • Prototype and iterate quickly using Blueprints (C++ optional)
  • Collaborate with design and art teams to bring concepts into gameplay
  • Help establish scalable systems that will support full production
  • Contribute to technical decision-making and workflow improvements
What We’re Looking For
  • Experience with Unreal Engine 5
  • Strong understanding of Blueprint scripting
  • Ability to build and structure gameplay systems independently
  • A portfolio or examples of Unreal projects (student, personal, or professional)
  • Comfortable working remotely within a small indie team
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Desirable Skills
  • Knowledge of C++ in Unreal
  • Experience working on:
  • Narrative-driven or atmospheric games
  • Puzzle systems or interaction-heavy gameplay
  • Understanding of:
  • Camera design for cinematic gameplay
  • Player feel and responsiveness
  • Familiarity with version control (Git / Perforce)
Why Join Us?
  • Be part of a unique, stylised horror project with a strong creative vision
  • Work closely with the Game Director to shape core gameplay systems
  • Have a direct impact on the feel and structure of the game
  • Flexible working hours (~20 hrs/week)
  • Opportunity for revenue share upon release and a potential paid position once funding is secured
