Role DescriptionAs the Unreal Engine Programmer on Morag’s Birthday Party, you will play a key role in bringing the game’s core systems and moment-to-moment gameplay to life.
You’ll work closely with the Game Director to translate design ideas into interactive experiences, shaping how players explore, interact, and navigate the world. The project is a stylised 3D narrative horror game, blending environmental storytelling, puzzle-solving, and cinematic atmosphere.
This role focuses on building the foundational gameplay systems that define the player experience — from movement and camera to interaction and progression.
You’ll be encouraged to take ownership of systems, suggest improvements, and help define technical workflows as the project grows.
Responsibilities- Implement core gameplay systems in Unreal Engine 5, including:
- Character movement (3D exploration)
- Cinematic / fixed camera system (Little Nightmares–inspired)
- Interaction system (objects, environment, triggers)
- Inventory system (basic)
- Puzzle logic and progression systems
- Door / unlocking systems
- Prototype and iterate quickly using Blueprints (C++ optional)
- Collaborate with design and art teams to bring concepts into gameplay
- Help establish scalable systems that will support full production
- Contribute to technical decision-making and workflow improvements
- Experience with Unreal Engine 5
- Strong understanding of Blueprint scripting
- Ability to build and structure gameplay systems independently
- A portfolio or examples of Unreal projects (student, personal, or professional)
- Comfortable working remotely within a small indie team
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Knowledge of C++ in Unreal
- Experience working on:
- Narrative-driven or atmospheric games
- Puzzle systems or interaction-heavy gameplay
- Understanding of:
- Camera design for cinematic gameplay
- Player feel and responsiveness
- Familiarity with version control (Git / Perforce)
- Be part of a unique, stylised horror project with a strong creative vision
- Work closely with the Game Director to shape core gameplay systems
- Have a direct impact on the feel and structure of the game
