About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Digital Delivery Manager to lead the delivery of a major refactoring project for the RSPB’s Conservation GIS mapping system (Merlin). This critical role will focus on modernising and stabilising the existing application architecture to meet the unique demands of the RSPB's conservation work, whilst also maintaining current compliance, resilience, and performance standards.
The Merlin system currently utilises Microsoft Silverlight and runs on Windows Server 2016. Your role will involve coordinating complex software migrations, ensuring code refactoring is completed to the highest standards, and managing dependencies across multiple teams. This project is expected to span 1-3 years, with this role initially fixed for 12 months and likely to extend.
Key Responsibilities
Project Delivery: Lead the successful delivery of the Merlin refactoring project using appropriate methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, or hybrid)
Technical Oversight: Ensure refactoring activities meet compliance, resilience, and performance requirements
Stakeholder Engagement: Work closely with Conservation Data Management Unit (CDMU), DDaT, and senior stakeholders to provide clear updates, manage expectations, and resolve challenges
Team Coordination: Manage multi-disciplinary teams, ensuring effective collaboration across technical and business functions
Governance & Documentation: Maintain robust governance, RAID logs, and develop standardised templates for consistent reporting and documentation
Risk & Issue Management: Identify and mitigate risks associated with legacy technologies and migration activities
Budget & Resource Control: Manage budgets, forecasts, and resource allocation to ensure delivery within agreed parameters
Continuous Improvement: Promote best practice in delivery and technical governance throughout the project lifecycle
About You
You are a highly organised and proactive delivery professional with a proven track record of managing large-scale digital or refactoring projects. You thrive in complex environments, balancing technical challenges with strong leadership and clear communication.
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Significant experience delivering digital projects involving legacy system refactoring or software migrations
- Strong understanding of Microsoft technologies, including MS Fabric (essential) and Silverlight
- Experience with Esri products, angular and SQL (highly beneficial)
- Strong understanding and working knowledge of ArcGIS (in particular ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise) and mapping technologies
- Proven ability to manage budgets, forecasts, and resource planning
- Excellent stakeholder management skills, including engagement with senior leadership
- Expertise in delivery methodologies (Agile, Waterfall, hybrid) and governance frameworks
- Highly organised, with exceptional prioritisation and planning abilities
Desirable:
- Professional certifications such as PRINCE2, AgilePM, PMP, or ITIL
- Experience in conservation IT or similar regulated environments
- Familiarity with tools such as MS Project, Jira, Miro, Power Platform (inc Power BI), MS Fabric and Office 365
