About the Opportunity We are seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer specialising in Distribution Network Operator (DNO) connections and EV charging infrastructure to support a critical National Highways project.
This role offers exceptional flexibility-we are open to full-time hybrid arrangements or part-time/adhoc working patterns, making this ideal for experienced engineers seeking flexible working conditions alongside impactful, high-profile infrastructure work.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the electrical technical input for National Highways DNO connection projects across multiple sites concurrently.
- Translate EV infrastructure load demand data (charger counts, kVA requirements, and charger types) into robust electrical connection specifications.
- Develop, review, and check electrical engineering packages for DNO connections, focused on 11/0.4kV transformer-coupled Ring Main Units (RMUs) and LV feeder pillars.
- Produce key design documentation, including single line diagrams (SLDs), load schedules, cable schedules, equipment specifications, and technical datasheets.
- Act as the primary technical contact with DNOs, reviewing connection offers, assessing constraints, and expediting connection applications and capacity upgrades.
- Prioritise and manage multi-site connection strategies across competing project deadlines.
Qualifications & Experience
Qualifications:
- Relevant Electrical Engineering qualification (Degree, HND/HNC, or equivalent completed apprenticeship).
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status (or actively working toward professional registration).
Technical & Industry Knowledge:
- DNO & Grid Connections: Proven experience preparing DNO connection applications, capacity upgrade requests, and managing utility interfaces.
- HV/LV Distribution Systems: Strong background in LV and 11kV distribution networks, specifically 11/0.4kV transformers, RMUs, and feeder pillars.
- EV Infrastructure: Direct experience assessing EV charging electrical loads and translating requirements into scalable distribution designs.
- Project Delivery: Ability to manage competing priorities across large-scale, multi-site highway portfolios while adhering to UK electrical standards and HSE regulations.
Personal Profile:
- Proactive and self-motivated with strong organisational skills across multi-site deliverable.
- Strong stakeholder communicator, comfortable liaising with DNOs, external consultants, and client representatives.
- Compromise-free approach to electrical safety, risk management, and client satisfaction.
