Role Overview
We’re seeking an experienced Embedded Controls Engineer to act as the primary technical expert across several projects. You’ll collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to design, develop and validate embedded software for advanced electrical power systems and converters. This role requires strong embedded C skills, excellent communication, and the flexibility to work onsite in Rugeley 2–3 days per week, with the ability to increase onsite presence during key project phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the lead embedded engineer within a small, specialist team focused on developing electrical power systems, including power converters.
- Work alongside systems and electronics engineers to produce robust system designs.
- Create DSP- and/or microprocessor-based control solutions for protection devices and power conversion equipment.
- Build and test prototypes to validate design performance.
- Define system interfaces and ensure smooth integration with connected subsystems.
- Support verification, qualification, and compliance testing activities.
- Analyse, interpret, and challenge customer requirements to ensure clarity and feasibility.
- Collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders to resolve design questions and uncertainties.
- Establish clear interface definitions and handover documentation throughout the project lifecycle.
- Promote reuse of existing designs where possible to increase efficiency and consistency.
- Conduct system-level analysis and contribute to validation and verification strategies.
- Improve or develop engineering processes that deliver repeatable and high-value outcomes.
Scope & Impact
You’ll oversee the successful delivery of software-related project tasks, ensuring outputs are completed within agreed schedules and budget constraints.
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Software Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience developing embedded software, ideally within automotive, aerospace, defence, nuclear, or similarly regulated sectors.
- Strong Embedded C experience for microcontroller platforms such as STM32.
- Familiarity with low-voltage systems and sensor communication.
- Knowledge of embedded software behaviour within broader systems.
- Experience with DSPs is advantageous.
- Proficiency in C/C++ and/or Python for microcontroller applications.
- Experience with MATLAB/Simulink code generation is a plus.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a proactive learning mindset.
Preferred Qualifications
- Background in system testing.
- Knowledge of power system design and operation.
- Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS, Polarion).
- Exposure to agile methodologies and tools such as Jira.
Additional Information
- Salary: Up to £60k (with potential increase to £65k for highly senior candidates).
- Clearance: Ideally already SC-cleared, or eligible for SC (UK nationality preferred but not required).
- Onsite Requirement: Rugeley-based, 2–3 days per week minimum, with flexibility for increased onsite work depending on project needs.
