Technical Art & 3D Modelling Trainer

About Realityjam

Realityjam (Virtual Reality Jam Ltd) is a UK-based game development studio and multiplayer game development platform on a mission to reimagine how games are made and how careers in the industry are built.

Our Industry Access Program is a two-year pathway that empowers the next generation of coders, artists, and creators to forge real careers in game development — without traditional education barriers. Learners work on live MMO titles from day one, earning credits on published games while developing professional-grade skills in a fully remote, community-driven environment.

We are now looking for an experienced Technical Artist with experience as a trainer to join our growing pool of specialist trainers.

The Role

As a Technical Art & 3D Modelling Trainer, you will deliver approximately one day of structured, hands-on training per week to cohorts of aspiring game developers and technical artists working through the Realityjam Industry Access Program, during UK business hours.

Your sessions will blend practical instruction with real-world context — learners are actively contributing to live game projects, so your teaching will be grounded in production-grade workflows rather than abstract theory. You will report to the Programme Lead and work collaboratively with the wider training team to ensure session content aligns with the programme's curriculum and learning outcomes.

This is a freelance, remote role ideally suited to a working games professional who wants to share their expertise, shape the next generation of technical artists, and be part of a movement redefining game development careers.

Key Responsibilities Training Delivery
  • Deliver one structured training day per week (approx 8 hours) covering technical art and 3D modelling fundamentals and advanced workflows.
  • Educational content and learning materials have been planned and produced by our team, you'll be required to deliver this content using our own bespoke learning environment.
  • Deliver live, remote-first sessions that are practical, engaging, and rooted in industry-standard production pipelines.
  • Set and assess learner exercises, portfolio tasks, and project milestones aligned with programme learning outcomes.
  • Adapt session content to the varying skill levels and backgrounds of learners across the three programme pathways (Scion Foundation, Published Game, and 2 Years Experience tracks).
Curriculum & Content
  • Develop and maintain session materials, reference guides, and recorded walkthroughs using Unity, Blender, and Substance Painter as primary tools.
  • Contribute to the evolution of the technical art curriculum in collaboration with the Programme Lead and other trainers.
  • Ensure content stays current with industry tool updates and production best practices.
  • Contextualise learning through Realityjam's live game projects, particularly 5th Dimension, wherever possible.
Learner Support
  • Provide feedback and guidance to learners on their work, helping them build portfolios that reflect genuine production quality.
  • Flag learner progress, attendance, or wellbeing concerns to the Programme Lead in a timely manner.
  • Participate in occasional programme team check-ins and trainer briefings as required.
Primary Training Tools

Training sessions will be built around the following industry-standard tools. Confident, production-level proficiency in all three is essential:

Unity Engine

Scene assembly, asset import pipelines, prefab workflows, materials and shaders, lighting, LOD, and optimisation for real-time game environments.

Blender

3D modelling (hard surface and organic), UV unwrapping, retopology, rigging fundamentals, baking, and FBX/glTF export for game engines.

Substance Painter

PBR texturing workflows, smart materials, baking from high-poly, texture set management, and export to Unity-compatible formats.

Desirable Skills & Experience
  • Demonstrable professional experience as a Technical Artist or 3D Artist within the games industry, with a strong portfolio of shipped or in-development work.
  • Advanced proficiency in Blender, Substance Painter, and Unity — comfortable teaching each tool at a production level.
  • Deep understanding of real-time art pipelines: polygon budgets, texture atlasing, normal map workflows, PBR materials, and performance optimisation.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to learners at different skill levels.
  • Self-directed and reliable — able to plan and deliver sessions with minimal oversight in a remote environment.
  • Comfortable working asynchronously and communicating via Discord and remote collaboration tols.
  • Previous experience in training, mentoring, or education — formal or informal.
  • Familiarity with MMO or online game art pipelines and the specific constraints they involve.
  • Experience with Unity's Universal Render Pipeline (URP) or High Definition Render Pipeline (HDRP).
  • Knowledge of shader graph, VFX graph, or procedural material creation workflows.
  • Interest in game development access, diversity, or community-building initiatives.
What We Offer
  • A rate of $300 per hour for all scheduled training hours — paid to you as a freelance contractor.
  • Fully remote delivery with flexible scheduling agreed directly with the Programme Lead.
  • The opportunity to shape the technical art skills of the next generation of game developers from day one of their careers.
