Technical Lead

Technical Lead | Engineering Lead | FitTech (Fitness Technology)

UK | Fully Remote (occasional in-person collaboration)

Permanent | Long-term programme

Recann is working with a technology consultancy that has been awarded a multi-year digital transformation programme for a leading UK gym chain. The programme focuses on building a new, greenfield mobile platform to support member experience at national scale.

They are seeking an experienced Technical Lead to take ownership of the platform from an early stage and lead delivery alongside a small, senior engineering team.

The role

You will act as the Technical Lead, working closely with the client’s senior technology stakeholders and an offshore senior engineer. The initial team is deliberately small and senior, with further growth planned.

This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong technical judgement, pace, and ownership.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the design and delivery of a greenfield application for member experience
  • Own backend architecture with a focus on security, performance, and scalability
  • Build an abstraction layer over a legacy member CRM, owning data rather than relying solely on APIs
  • Drive product and technical requirements with senior client stakeholders
  • Lead stand-ups and day-to-day delivery for a two-person team initially
  • Make independent implementation decisions while collaborating on major architectural choices
  • Support recruitment as the team grows to 3–4 senior engineers
  • Champion modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, code quality, and GenAI-assisted development

Technology environment

  • TypeScript
  • FastAPI
  • AWS
  • React Native
  • CI/CD pipelines
  • Sonar Cloud
  • GitHub and modern development tooling
  • GenAI tools such as Cursor

About you

  • Proven experience as a Tech Lead or senior engineer operating at lead level
  • Strong backend focus with experience in complex, secure, high-performance systems
  • Comfortable working directly with client technology leadership
  • Experience leading small, senior teams and driving momentum
  • Strong ownership mindset and ability to operate autonomously
  • Positive, energetic, and delivery-focused approach
  • Open to long-term programme work rather than short project cycles

Working pattern and commitment

  • Fully remote within the UK
  • Occasional in-person meetings. Typically every six months
  • Long-term programme with a 5–10 year roadmap

Recruitment process

  • Initial screening with Recann
  • Technical coding challenge
  • One-hour interview:
  • 15 minutes. Coding challenge discussion
  • 30 minutes. Background and experience review
  • 15 minutes. Candidate questions

Target start date is end of March, with notice periods of up to 2–3 months considered.
