Role: Data Technician

The Opportunity
An established UK civil engineering and infrastructure specialist is seeking a Data Technician to support project and delivery teams by integrating, developing and enhancing tools, systems and processes. The role will improve the management of safety, health, environmental, quality (HSEQ) and commercial data, while driving efficiency, continuous improvement and innovation across the region.
Working with internal teams and external specialists, you will help strengthen coding, data management and operational processes, enabling better data-led decision making, legislative compliance and measurable improvements in operational and commercial performance, carbon reduction and strategic planning.
Key Responsibilities
• Design and implement tools to streamline HSEQ data capture, analysis and reporting.
• Automate data-heavy processes to reduce administrative workload and improve efficiency.
• Develop balanced scorecards and Power BI dashboards providing live, integrated views of business performance, including inspections, waste management, interventions and audit data.
• Support and monitor the deployment of new digital platforms, ensuring effective integration with existing systems.
• Oversee quarterly verification of carbon data required for external audits and carbon-reduction reporting.
• Implement systems for plant idling data capture and telematics, integrating information into unified business dashboards.
• Design controlled tests to assess the impact of social value initiatives, including community messaging and public sentiment.
• Use data insights to enhance social value activity and support stronger public relations outcomes.
• Compare tender assumptions and outputs against actual project performance to identify profitability drivers and opportunities to improve future tenders.
• Model future work programmes and analyse historic project performance to support operational planning and identify potential gaps.
• Develop automated reports and trackers covering retention, debt, WIP and cash position, providing timely performance information and action reminders to commercial teams.
• Create efficiency models from solution reviews, test them through delivery and present findings through Power BI reporting.
• Compile data and site information from operational reporting into monthly client reports for discipline leads.
• Support the comprehensive capture of Research & Development activity to maximise eligible innovation-related tax opportunities.
• Help establish structured testing regimes to assess cause and effect, effort versus reward and the effectiveness of different techniques.
About You
Essential
• Experience using data management and reporting tools to collect, analyse and present information effectively.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft 365 applications, including Word, Excel, OneNote, Planner, OneDrive, Teams, SharePoint, Power Apps, Power BI and Power Automate.
• Ability to develop and maintain basic automated workflows and integrate data across Microsoft 365 platforms.
• Understanding of SharePoint Lists, data storage and information-sharing best practice.
• Good knowledge of Excel functions, formulas, pivot tables and reporting techniques.
• Basic PowerShell skills to support administration and automation activities.
• Understanding of data privacy, security and governance principles.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to resolve system and data-related issues.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships at all levels.
Desirable
• Recognised certification in one or more of the following: Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI, SharePoint, Python or SQL.
• Knowledge and understanding of Python.
• Experience within civil engineering, infrastructure, construction, utilities or another project-led environment.
