We have a variety of roles in sensors and electronic systems including in combat, platform electrical and propulsion systems. You will be found a role which most suits your experience whilst being provided with opportunities to develop further skills and broaden your experience in a range of technologies.
You will play a critical role in contributing to the design, development, integration, and maintenance of the advanced, complex systems used in nuclear-powered submarines.
You will work across the full system life cycle, from concept and design through to testing, commissioning, and in-service support. We have a variety of roles in sensors and electronic systems including in combat, platform electrical and propulsion systems. Your work may involve sonar, navigation, environmental monitoring, platform and electrical propulsion systems, IT Infrastructure and Computing Environment engineering, all of which must operate flawlessly in some of the most challenging environments on Earth.
You will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including defence contractors, Royal Navy personnel, and other government stakeholders, to ensure that all systems meet rigorous safety, performance, and regulatory standards. You will also contribute to innovation and continuous improvement, evaluating emerging technologies and supporting the SDA’s commitment to engineering excellence.

Key Responsibilities
- Manage the delivery of all engineering aspects in area of responsibility as defined in the assignment specification or objectives including managing the acquisition safety aspects
- Provide expert advice and guidance in own technical area to solve complex technical problems and identify application risks.
- Monitor and implement any governance and assurance
- Lead on the development of requirements related to own area of specialism including acceptance plans, performance criteria and draft specifications
- Interface with industry as the intelligent customer both in a scrutiny role and supporting the identification of application risks
- Ensure the integration of sensors and electronics into complex submarine systems, working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Support the full life cycle of electronic systems, from concept design through to commissioning, in-service support, and decommissioning
- Perform rigorous testing, calibration, and fault diagnosis of sensor and electronic components to ensure compliance with MOD standards
- Contribute to the development and application of new technologies and innovations in sensor and electronics engineering.
- Maintain accurate technical documentation and provide expert advice during design reviews, safety assessments, and project planning activities
Person specification
To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following Essential Criteria;
- Experience of working in an electronics, systems, or sensor engineering regulated environment
- Demonstrable evidence of strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Examples of communication skills both verbal and written
- Experience of providing technical advice and leading the delivery of successful engineering outcomes
- Ability to write coherent, quality, succinct documents, and reports as the primary means of providing feedback
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer or equivalent relevant professional registration (or demonstrate requisite qualification/equivalent experience to enable successful application as IEng to Professional Engineering Institution within 6 months of starting the position)
