Data Protection Officer

We require a Data Rights Assistant to cover an existing workload within Metropolitan Police, based in Marlowe House, Sidcup (Hybrid working – 3 days per week from January).

This is an interim position for an initial 6 months with the potential to be extended, dependent on workload.

Job Purpose:

  • Accurately record all incoming Data Rights requests, ensuring they are assessed and recorded in a timely manner within CycFreedom.
  • Communicate with members of the public and with officers and staff of all ranks in a clear, concise and professional manner.
  • Order, collect and scan exhibits and files on behalf of Data Rights Officers in respect of Data Rights requests.
  • Responsible for ensuring the mailboxes assigned to various Data Rights areas are cleared in a timely manner, with all correspondence correctly filed and forwarded to the relevant Data Rights Officer.
  • Respond to chasers and other correspondence received in respect of Data Rights requests.
  • Securing of BWV/CCTV (and emerging technologies) that are relevant to data rights work.
  • Be the decision maker of ‘obvious’ incorrectly received requests (3rd party requests, no trace, wrong police force) and either defining or rejecting as appropriate.
  • Manage and complete low risk FOI requests, making decisions and writing responses as necessary.
  • Respond to insurance requests, following the guidance provided to assess proportionality and carrying out research on police indices in order to extract the answers the questions, before writing and sending the response to the insurance company.
  • Keep specialist knowledge ensuring you remain up-to-date with changes in DPA legislation, NPCC and ICO guidance.
  • Provide legislative and policy (national and MPS specific) guidance to senior officers.
  • Assist in the preparation of disclosures for the Disclosure log including removal of personal data and meta data as well as ensuring compatibility with accessibility requirements/the DDA.
  • Review documents for publication to ensure suitability and compatibility with legislative requirements such as the Disability Discrimination Act.
  • Complete ‘on site’ support functions (post/archive record retrieval etc) on behalf of the Data Rights Team.

Skills and experience needed to be successful in this role:

  • A practical understanding of key legislation (DPA, UK-GDPR and FOIA) and the ability to broaden your knowledge to fill any gaps within 12 months of appointment.
  • Knowledge of associated legislation and policies relevant to information law.
  • Proven ability to work within a pressurised environment, supported by strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise competing requirements effectively.
  • The ability to evaluate, summarise and articulate information law requirements in a clear and user-friendly format.
  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills with experience of communicating with both the public and with senior members of the organisation.
