About the RoleAs a DevOps Engineer, you’ll be instrumental in designing and maintaining scalable, secure, and reproducible research computing environments. You’ll empower researchers to harness the full potential of high-performance computing (HPC), cloud platforms, and AI-ready infrastructures—driving innovation across disciplines.
This role blends technical expertise with strategic vision, supporting everything from big data analysis and machine learning to qualitative research and open science initiatives. You’ll collaborate with world-class academics, IT professionals, and external partners to deliver environments that are not only powerful but also ethical, compliant, and future-proof.
What You’ll Be Doing- Build and optimise research environments tailored to diverse computational needs—from econometrics to NLP.
- Integrate AI/ML frameworks and containerisation tools to enhance reproducibility and scalability.
- Streamline workflows with automation, job scheduling, and CI/CD pipelines.
- Champion secure, federated access for collaborative research across institutions.
- Deploy hybrid cloud solutions to balance performance, flexibility, and cost-efficiency.
- Deliver expert support and training to elevate researchers’ technical capabilities.
- Embed responsible research practices, including FAIR principles, GDPR compliance, and AI ethics.
- Drive continuous improvement by evaluating emerging technologies and fostering innovation.

You’re a technically skilled, forward-thinking problem solver with a passion for research computing and AI. You understand the needs of academic researchers and know how to translate those into robust, scalable digital environments.
Experience with HPC, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerisation (Docker, Singularity), and research software tools (MATLAB, R, Python, TensorFlow, NVivo) is essential. Familiarity with data governance, reproducibility frameworks, and AI ethics is highly desirable.
