Hosting Platform Engineer

We are seeking a Hosting Platform Engineer responsible for the build, provisioning, support, maintenance, and lifecycle management of IT infrastructure and associated technologies. This role is crucial in underpinning our current and future IT strategies, encompassing storage, hosting platforms (on-premises, off-premises, and cloud), virtualisation, operating systems, backup and recovery, and infrastructure software and tools.

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge of operating systems like Red Hat Linux, Solaris, and Windows Server.
  • Strong experience with operational/automation tools such as Red Hat Ansible and/or System Centre Orchestrator.
  • Proficiency in scripting languages like Bash, Perl, Curl, PowerShell.
  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite, Microsoft System Center (SCOM and SCCM), and VEEAM backup technologies.
  • Certification in Red Hat components, VMware (ESXi, vCenter, vSAN, vROps, and Orchestrator) is advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of networks, IP addressing, protocols, storage, and server hardware technologies.
  • Experience with TLS/SSL/PKI concepts, certificate deployment and renewal, and high-availability hosting platform architectures.
  • Excellent communication skills, capable of engaging with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Influential negotiation skills and effective stakeholder management.
  • ITIL processes and standards knowledge, with at least ITIL Foundation Level preferred.
  • Degree in an IT discipline, or equivalent experience.

Day-to-day of the role:

  • Ensure hosting platforms and associated infrastructures are reliable and available 24/7/365.
  • Act as a subject matter expert for complex configurations, implementations, and operational requirements.
  • Review, approve, and maintain build and configuration standards for upgrades, new technologies, or project delivery.
  • Engage with IT security, business units, and other stakeholders to enforce and maintain policies, patterns, and standards.
  • Manage, support, and maintain databases, data services, and software, including patching and upgrades.
  • Produce high-quality design, support documentation, and operational processes to eliminate single points of failure.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements such as GDPR and NIS directive.
  • Develop and maintain effective security within databases and data systems.
  • Ensure hosting platforms and software stacks are reliably backed up and protected.
  • Maintain operational KPIs through dashboards for patching, capacity, and utilisation.
  • Identify and initiate service improvements using automation.
  • Document and maintain all deployments and services in a central content repository.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex faults and issues.
  • Provide out-of-hours support for database-related incidents and key IT system changes.

Serves a 1 in 6 week On-call rota (6PM-8AM)
