Senior Service Designer - DV Clearance required

A law enforcement organisation that is a national network dedicated to protecting the public and keeping the UK safe from terrorism is seeking an experienced Senior Service Designer to join the Service Design & Transition function within DDAT. You will play a vital role in shaping, designing, and guiding the development of services that support mission-critical national security programmes.

As a senior practitioner, you will work autonomously, lead design direction for a major programme, mentor junior designers, and ensure that all services are designed around user needs, operational effectiveness, and secure delivery models.

This role aligns to the Government Digital and Data Professional Capability Framework for Senior Service Designers.

This is an initial 6-month contract based in Central London (3 days per week onsite and 2 days working from home), the daily rate for the role is up to £600 per day via an Umbrella company (Inside IR35). Due to the nature of the role the successful candidate will need to already have DV clearance and once transferred they will need to undergo STRAP.

Key Responsibilities

As Senior Service Designer, you will:

  • Work with the Service Design Lead to drive design activity for a major national programme.
  • Mentor, guide and support Service Designers, Junior Service Designers, and the Service Acceptance Analyst.
  • Develop clear, simple, user-centred service design approaches that maximise value and operational effectiveness.
  • Document design decisions, design rationale, and associated risks in a concise and structured way.
  • Facilitate productive dialogue between Users, Project Management, Service Operations and Service Delivery teams.
  • Advocate for and apply ITIL 4, Agile methodologies, and Continual Service Improvement.
  • Collaborate closely with the Service Transition Team to ensure successful transition into live service.
  • Use data, research findings and user feedback to inform design decisions and service improvements.
  • Champion best practice across service design, user experience, and service operations.

Essential Experience & Skills

Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Proven experience designing services to meet user needs.
  • Strong understanding of service design methods, tools and best practice.
  • Experience using data and user insight to inform service improvements.
  • Experience converting service designs into operational, functioning services.
  • Broad design practitioner background spanning related disciplines (UX, interaction design, user research).
  • Experience mentoring and developing colleagues.
  • Experience working in an Agile delivery environment.
  • Strong knowledge of ITIL 4 and Agile delivery frameworks.
  • Understanding of PRINCE2 and/or other relevant project methodologies.
  • Good understanding of IT hardware layers and deployment models.
  • Strong ability to prioritise, make decisions and operate confidently in high-pressure environments.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
