Telephony Systems Modernisation Engineer (Contract)
Location: Remote (with occasional site visits)Office attendance: Twice weekly (Thursday & Friday) or Fully Remote Engagement: Initial short-term contract, potential extension
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Telephony Systems Modernisation Engineer to help streamline, stabilise, and modernise our current voice infrastructure. Our environment has grown rapidly and not always in the cleanest or most structured way, so this role is critical in bringing clarity, consistency, and long-term strategy to how we operate.
You will take ownership of our telephony systems end-to-end — from legacy PBX and SQL-driven comms platforms through to modern Teams Direct Routing, billing, SIP trunking, and cloud-based solutions. This role is ideal for someone who can step in quickly, operate autonomously, and provide both hands-on support and strategic guidance.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess, stabilise, and modernise existing telephony infrastructure and routing architecture.
- Manage and support systems such as:
- AudioCodes SBCs (on-prem)
- Teams Direct Routing
- CommsWare SQL-based legacy systems
- Orterio (OTARIO) billing and SIP trunking
- Lead effort to consolidate systems toward a simplified, “one throat to throttle” operating model.
- Provide ongoing support for PBX equipment, call centre functionality, and telephony-dependent hardware/infrastructure across multiple sites.
- Deliver implementation work on new or upgraded telephony components.
- Conduct knowledge transfer to internal teams to reduce single points of failure.
- Advise on and potentially implement a future cloud telephony solution.
- Perform occasional on-site work where needed (sites include Slough, South Kensington, and other locations using central telephony services).

What We’re Looking For
- Strong experience with enterprise telephony systems, routing, and SBC management.
- Background with legacy PBX and modern Microsoft voice technologies.
- Ability to quickly understand messy or fragmented setups and implement structure.
- Hands-on capability with SQL-based telephony config, SIP, and voice network troubleshooting.
- Skilled in stabilising existing estate while planning long-term modernisation.
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership of a mixed legacy/modern environment.
- Good communicator who can perform knowledge transfer to permanent staff.
